Is Toyota loosing the plot ?
With Toyota trying to be No 1 car manufacturer in the world its sad to see their total exit from sports cars.
Gee they have a TRD HiAce in Australia go figure that one out ( sports car ? ). I think they are going to be left behind. Any one see the South Korean Olillum Spirra S . One nice looking car ferrari/lambo all put into one. Production ready. This car would have been a good evolution of the MR2. Maybe the rear engine layout has not been 100% lost with the Toyota executives ? Can some one link the car for me |

Cartype : Proto Spirra
with a price tag of 90k, i don't see anyone in the states buying this in the near future. The fact that its built in korea along would throw people off to purchasing it. on a side note, I hate the rear end of that thing. The wheels don't sit flush and there is way to much gap on rear wheels. looks like they gave up when it came to that part. |

This has been debated lots on the forum and the overall answer is yes. Toyota has decide to just grow on its economic and realiblity strengths and left Scion to cater to the youths/tuners even if you dont consider yourself in thier demographic. Anyways this thread has nothing to do with the BEAMS so next time post the apporiate threads in thier designated forums.

Mandalay and other Beams members can post what they want in this forum within reason, this is a community inside of a community and some of our members don't like leaving this haven of the Beams
.And to your post, I completely agree with you on what Toyota has done. I've rumors though of bringing a sports car type vehicle back into production I think in 2011. |

Toyota upped it's stake in Fuji and the rumor mill suggests they will be launching a new rwd/awd sporty car (think 2 door sti merged with last celica concept) under the toyota name and subaru name.
2011ish is when it's due. hopefully it'll be fairly inexpensive, starting sub 25k, and lightweight

Yeah there has been speculation that a new sports car is being developed that is going to be RWD from toyota but so far eveything is a rumour. Ive heard itll be a re-make of the AE86 other say its a new model. But with no offical press releases, concept art, or models im afraid that this rumour is going to stay one. The car market is looking grim with gas rising so if this car isnt already being marketed and ok for future production i doubt Toyota will make it in 2011 when gas will be $8 or higher. On a side note though they could do still make but it'll probably be a Hybrid making costs to the upper 30's. ![]() |

A car in the spirit of the ae86 (lightweight, RWD, inexpensive) will do well regardless of gas prices, and something of that nature should get good mileage anyway.
2500 lbs, rwd, 200hp NA, please. ![]() America still has to drive (for the most part). The price of gas doesn't make our infrastructure or city layouts any better. |

Gen3 swap DONE!!
|
Definitely, I mean my Gen3 turbo still gets an average of 26-27MPG. They just get a nice little n/a with some potential but not exactly a race car stock, it'll sell like crazy. Thats the whole reason I even have an MR2. It was the only car that worked for what I wanted. Small, sporty, VERY high performance potential, and decent gas mileage so I could actually afford to drive it. Lol I hate most newer inexpensive cause they're either not great for moding or just plain ugly as ****.

The more I drive different cars, the more I realize the difference in weight. I would love a lightweight 200HP RWD car in the spirit of the AE86, but I don't think Toyota will ever do it because lightweight and cheap to most people just means unsafe. If you want a lightweight car to be safe you have to use different composites and lots of testing and that gets expensive.
I think every car manufacturers(except maybe TVR) when faced with a choice of higher safety ratings, or lighter weight will go for the extra star on their rollover report. We don't think about it when we drive our MR2s, and there are a lot of people here who've even removed their airbags, but safety these days effects weight and performance. Unfortunately, we are the minority here and the masses want cheaper/safer cars rather than cheaper/performance cars. |

Isn't the new platform from SUbaru/Toyota supposed to be of MR design? That's what I read on various sites, and that it is supposed to house a Subaru engine.

Subarus engines last a long time from what I've seen, atleast the old wagons used too. It will be neat to see what they come up with.

Unless they blow their rear main seals. I was looking at Legacy wagons for a while but every damn one I saw was dripping oil from the back of the motor.

Gross! That thing is ugly im waiting on pics of the Hatch, its screams ugly new Lexus look. Hatches have a soft spot in my heart. The Ultimate would be a MR Hatch like a Renault Clio RS! Yea the first ver. the GT is supposed to be the AE86 forth-coming. Itll sell big if its RWD and under 20K, the drift scene is going to explode with kids.
