Getting Prepared For BEAMS Swap
Ok so im about to pull the trigger and purchase my BEAMS!! Im getting a caldina Greytop and im think ill be the first to get a Greytop in a MR2. Im going to have a full wiring harness, ECU, AFM and airbox. So im starting this thread to go over the necessary items im going to need/request parts! Im know im going to need the water outlet housing and themrostat housing, 3S clutch & pressure plate, swap the alternator bracket, get a tach signal coverter and i think thats it. I wonder if i can use the water housing from my 5S?
So now for my parts request: Does any one have a spare water and themro housing they would like to sell me? If not ill just order one from toyota. Also does anyone have a spare manual BEAMS ECU? I dont mind running the Auto ECU but i do want to get the greytop to redtop specs eventually. Any recommendations on a tach adapter? I heard MSD has a good one. |

Sorry cant help, too far across the pond.
But Do you mind telling me where you got the greytop, I have been looking for one to stick into my 2 but without much success and seeing as i already have an ECU the greytop will not make much difference power wise as soon as the headers are changed for the Pheonix Power one. |

First off welcome to the club. 1) You can keep the alternator where it is because it doesn't interefere with anything but the oil level dipstick. 2) The 5s main water outlet will not work. You'll need to source one from a Gen3 3sge or like me from a Gen3 3sgte 3) I got my MSD tach adaptor 8920 from ebay. I bought it now for $50 IIRC. |

& if you do go the route of the MSD Tach Adapter, may I suggest you place it somewhere far away from where you can hear it because it makes an aweful rattle.
This was the #1 reason I wired in the BEAMS gauges cluster.... |

Congratulations !!
I have a few water outlets but would believe postage to be more than the part itself. The other obvious differences are air box, exhaust manifold ,b-pipe and all brackets ,heat shields, most of the hoses and pipes for the fuel tank breathers. U CAN STILL BUY THE beams TACHO APPROX $250 up to you. I also have many other new parts like hose, water bypass pipes , engine mounts and some brackets. Piping to charcoal canister and canister itsself is different also on the grey. ( dont know if that affects anything ) Also there are many people on here to help with wiring as the Beams engine harness and body harness is slightly different. Affects fuel pump, air conditioner, speedo and remember thethere might not be any oil float. The long block is the same as the RED TOP But as you can see there are still quite a lot of other differences. If you cant purchase them second hand leave it as it is as transforming it to a regular RED TOP can cost you a couple thousand dollars. Thats not including if you wish to change the flywheel, belts, water , oil pumps etc. Last edited by MANDALAY; 07-10-2008 at 03:31 AM.. |

Yeah mandalay shipping is expensive from your location. I looked just for fun cheapest i saw was 130 for shipping. Not cool, wish shipping was cheaper or else i would have Roman old motor from NZ. Ill pass on a $250 tach. Yea im seeing its going to take a lil bit of $ to get up to redtop specs. I can get a redtop from celics complete with tranny for not much more but ill have to wait 3 weeks. Hmm now im not sure if i should wait or not. I really want this running before school starts so i can enjoy the last bit of summer in my 2. |

If you want a beams cluster, then I found the deal of the century:
eBay Motors: JDM SW20 98 Spec MR2 Beams Red 260km Gauges Cluster (item 280240158915 end time Jul-25-08 22:11:50 PDT) He's only asking $1400. It's an obo auction, so you should offer $5. |

Oh my god. This is really killing me! I think i am going to wait because im going to spend more money to get it to spec. Meanwhile i wait im going to start getting the little tidbits needed for the swap so the second i get it i can just pop it in.

If you want a cheap tach adaptor w/o the rattle, you can build your own out of a 12V relay.

Yeah, tach "adaptor" issue was easily solved for me as well. A friend of mine (btw he is the president of the Toyota Sports Club in our country
) soldered (I hope this is the correct word) a simple LED (!!) into my stock tacho's electrics. That's all It's working perfectly in my case, but I don't know how different the other toyota's stock tachos are. |
