Converting Beams to use E85 Fuel
I'm wondering what would be involved in this type of conversion?
The higher octane fuel is a bonus as well as the long term savings but because the fuel is corrosive being 85% ethonal where would I begin with this project?? Any ideas anyone?Apparently you need bigger injectors, replace all rubber hose witth non rubber and other things. |

injector seals as far as i know as well (of course if your fuel lines etc are old its a great idea to do this anyways, just use high grade/quality fuel lines etc), get aeromotive micron fuel filters filters (bc e85 will clean up your tank & lines of sludge), hotter spark plugs, bigger injectors is one thing bc e85 will lean out your burn on standard ECU mapping for gasoline....you could get around this by getting an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, to a certain degree....higher flow air intake....replace OEM O2 sensors bc they will prolly freak at new gasses, don't know what the catalytic converter will do, if anything.....
get to a dyno/tuning station and make sure you maintain safe air/fuel ratios throughout the powerband before doing anything silly.... you are adding to the food/feed -corn (world) destabilization by switching to ethanol tho...remember that.... |

Yeah, this trend is sure going to effect agriculture
![]() Thanks for the info, I'm undecided if the change over will be practical though, and specifics I'd say are going to be important if this is going to work. Does anyone have some experience with this or can point me in a firm direction? |

I think you if you went for this conversion, you would be the first to make it happen. I am quite interested in it though, so if you do it, keep us up to date on how it goes.

E85 is a waste of time, effort and resources. It provides terrible gas mileage, and is only marginally cheaper than gas. Overall i see E85 being done away with within 5 years. It is only a temporary band-aid for our oil dependicies.
Now with that said, lets look at it in a motoring view: In a N/A the money and effort to convert isnt very effective but in turbocharged vehicles converting to E85 has shown quite a few gains in power and also very effective against detontation. But really if i was looking for something to provide those attributes then i would simply go with a water injection. Its cheaper easier and better. Overall i cant say that converting to E85 is worth your time. |

All good points, it is most definitely an exercise, though not really practical. Maybe I should investigate something more interesting... like turboing or supercharging.. hehe
Only problem is the compression ratios, though I have seen that it is possible to use high compression ratios if the mechanicals have been replaced with strengthened materials? This topic is going to teeter out if no one wants to grab the E85 torch.. |

well its going to be available in oz from the end of the year as shell has canned the 100 octane fuel as the v8 super taxis are going to the e85 ,but in the long term i might test this to see if it is better
