I've nearly finished the work on the mechanical bits for my track car, engine will hopefully be running some time this week, or maybe in the weekend.
Cant wait to fire it up! ![]() ![]() |

It's an 80s squarebox toyota carina, hahaha.
Looks like this, when not in a million million pieces... ![]() Here are a few more pics, sorry they are not overly clear. ![]() a![]() ![]() The basic rundown of the car/motor is: 1982 toyota carina coupe 1998 SW20 beams redtop 3SGE engine (sitting perfectly on standard engine mounts and crossmember )modified head, work done in Japan rebuilt with .5mm oversized standard pistons, balanced bottom end, all new gaskets/seals/etc Altezza sump, exhaust manifold, radiator ST202 beams celica ECU, engine loom, alternator/bracket custom rear water outlet TRD copy quad throttle adaptor, blacktop 4AGE throttles, 105mm long trumpets, fibreglass/aluminium airbox, cold air feed to front. I've tapped into each of the throttles to retain standard idle speed control. So cold morning starts wont be a problem haha. cusco flywheel, standard clutch Caldina 'greytop' engine cover, bright red doesnt really suit the old car IMO. ![]() 14,000km old 6 speed box with W57 speedo sender to convert it to cable drive.Standard W55 driveshaft, F series live axle with 4.3 ratio cusco 2 way altezza LSD Facelift SW20 calipers all round, brembo citreon xantia turbo discs up front, P11 primera wagon discs down back 15x7 impul prospoke wheels, toyo proxes T1R all round, will also get some semi/full slicks later cusco camber plates, adjustable height front suspension, KYB AE92 shocks, unknown springs, custom made T3 adjustable panhard rod Full bare metal respray! Oldschool TOMS bucket seat ![]() That's all I can think of for now, hahaha. It should weigh approx 950-1000kg when finished, so slightly lighter than my SW20 was, with presumably slightly more power. So it should be a bit of fun to cane around in. I thought about building a more powerful car after my MR2, but to be honest I was pretty happy with the amount of power it had, just wanted something different, that was a bit easier to work on! When you're going to thrash a car a lot, it's going to break. And when it breaks, you're going to have to fix it. So I want a car that's easy to fix! I can have the engine and gearbox out of this in under an hour. ![]() Last edited by Roman; 02-17-2009 at 08:27 AM.. |

that is entirely too few pictures, shame on you!
Oldschool TOMS bucket seat? PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN!! btw-1, 6 speed box from Altezza as well? btw-2, how the hell are you dealing with the SPD signal from the tranny-to-cluster-to-ECU? My ECU goes into "safe/limp" mode when it doesn't get SPD signal.... |

Looking good Roman!
Just curious, how are you going to run stock ecu with quads? have you placed the AFM pipe onto the plenum entrance? Or are you running a piggy back? Can't wait for you to finish ![]() |

The seat is nothing overly flash looking, it's quite... subtle I guess which is what I like. It's a nice to keep it all 80s ish inside and out. ![]() Quote:

If not it's no big deal, my old man is an electronics expert, I'm sure we'll be able to sort something out. ![]() Quote:
![]() Yeah, I'm still running the airflow meter! It's in the narrow part of the piping leading to the front, part of that pipe section is cut out of a 1MZFE airbox. The bellmouth part is made from fibreglass and part of a cake dish ![]() I cant see any good reason why it shouldnt run with the standard ECU... I've wired in the 20V 4AGE TPS, and this outputs exactly the same signal as the redtop one. The only potential problem I can see will come from where it's relying on the TPS for fuel enrichment with quick changes in throttle, but when at a steady state (WOT or cruising at a particular speed) it will be reading from the AFM anyway, which will still be getting the correct signal. Time will tell I guess, I'll have it on the dyno ASAP to check that it's all safe. I'm planning on going down the 1ZZFE powerfc route, which is part of why I've decided to retain the airflow meter. Haha, thanks, and no offense taken.
![]() I definitely chose this car on its technical merits more so than its looks. (Same goes for SW20... I used to hate them before I drove one!) I've grown to like it, but I know that it's not to everyones taste, and definitely not 'pretty' hahaha. I wanted an older RWD car to put my spare beams motor in, and wrote a list of all the possible types of rwd 70s/80s cars that I could think of, and why they would or wouldnt be a good candidate. Bearing in mind that I didnt want something that would handle like a big sack of crap compared to my SW20, and I wanted the car to be under 1000kg when finished. So no ball in box steering, no leaf springs, and nothing that would be a massive mission to make fit. AE85/AE86 Trueno/Levin.... Has good enough suspension etc, but need to cut trans tunnel, modify bonnet, etc etc to make engine fit. Best resale value, but highest purchase price, and lots of work to make anything fit. KE70 corolla... Same problems as AE86 KP60 starlet... Not keen on triangulated 4 link rear, even less room to make engine fit MZ10 soarer... Ticks all the boxes, except would be too heavy MA63 celica/supra Not keen on the styling KE30 corolla... Ball in box steering, leaf spring rear, mega hard to fit engine. KE25 corolla same as above MA70 supra... too heavy! GX71 cressida... Not keen on sedans ST141 corona.... not keen on sedans MA45 celica... Not big on the styling, notchbacks are alright but 99% are hatchbacks. And then the AA63 carina/celica.... The more 'homework' I did about them, the more they ticked all of the boxes. IRS, or 4 link + panhard rear suspension from factory. Engine mounts which could fit the motor straight in. Big enough trans tunnel to fit 6 spd box straight in. Factory driveshaft and clutch slave cylinder fits altezza box. Enough engine bay room to fit engine comfortably Can fit altezza LSD into the standard diff Big enough factory gaurds to fit decent sized wheels under And so on, it was just the best choice. ![]() I was also swayed a little after seeing one at a drift day doing exceptionally well, seeing a video on youtube of a 3S powered carina in a dual sprint with an EVO 2 holding its ground, and seeing another one that had a 7AGTE setup that went really well. Either way, I guess I should stop blathering on and go do some work on the car, hahaha. |

yeah i guess it looked like the TPS wasn't connected. How are you using the MAF? just near that bell mouth you are using? How about the idle speed control? How is that handled? Intake air temp? |

Yeah the 20V TPS is right by the head, the black square thing to the left of the left camwheel.
Quote:
![]() Quote:
These all tee together into one, which goes to the standard idle speed controller which is mounted on the underside of the airbox, that's where it gets its air from... So it's still getting air that has been 'read' by the MAF. Quote:
Dont take any of this as gospel yet as working great with standard ECU, it'll have to wait until I get the car running half way properly and can take it for a drive, to see if it actually works well or not. I'm planning on going 1ZZ powerfc route at some stage either way. (Hence keeping MAF) |
