SAFC -- Will it work?
As the title states: will an SAFC work with our motors? Or will the OBD-II jus' continually relearn the changed ratios/adjust as it deems necessary?
Wantin' to tune out some flat spots (2400-2900 rpm, etc) and make sure I maintain a proper A/F ratio throughout, and this seemed like the least expensive route to take... provided it works. If it won't work, what's the best route to take? ...hoping to avoid the standalone/more involved piggyback-type scenarios for the time being... |

3sgte's aren't OBD-II though, are they? I jus' keep reading how SAFC tuning doesn't work well for OBD-II cars 'cause the ECU keeps relearning or somethin' along those lines...

Back then when I bought my engine the former owner said that it has an SAFC and with it and the SARD filter, and custom made exhaust it's making 217 horses.
I dont know how much of that is true, and I'm still having problems with unleashing the stock 200 horses. I didn't ever get the SAFC though, I guess it was lost somewhere in the shipping procedure... |

Stupid Ass Fake Controller? Save your money and a decent EMS. Even a PowerFC is pretty bare bones when it comes to EMS's but 100x better than a SAFC!
Stock air/fuel ratios arent great but they work and are safe. With a SAFC chances are you will end up hurting more than helping. |

RedTop BEAMS != OBD2 officially at least, it's a sort of in-between version

No BEAMS is OBII. Its just Japanese spec so it uses different standards.

It's a different standard and lacks a few things. Can't use a US scanner with it either.
I'm not a fan of piggybacks if for no other reason than it involves hacking into a harness I made by people who may or may not know what they are doing. When they mess up, it tends to fall back on me. In the case of the beams, I think it would also be desirable to have control over vvti as well. Something that can't be done with an safc. |

..can't use a Uk OBDII scanner with MK 2 either though the Mk 3 is OBII as fas as I know which creates some problems with certain aftermarket ECU's
Don't know much about the SAFC at all but it sticks in mind that they aren't great with the 3S engines. I will be proved wrong though. Beams isn't OBDII, would make life allot easier if it were. |
