Temp guage help

I got a mech speedo 92 and everytime i turn my car on to ON without actually starting the car my temp gauge flys up to H and my radiator fans come on but i start the car the temp guage slowly drops all the way down to C. What could be the problem. Bad temp sensor ? or bad wiring? if bad sensor can i use a 3sgte temp sensor or a 5sfe. thanx

There's a ground for the gauge that runs through the larger connector in the fusebox. Make sure you have it grounded.

hmmmm wierd i dont see any loose wire that can be that one. is it the front fuse box or the engine bay one? if i dont have the wire there do i go to the back of the cluster to trace/splice it.
