It hooks up to the throttle pulley and runs down to the auto transmission. For some reason it hooks up as if to pull the valve to the closed position opposite the throttle cable which opens it. It might be there to actuate something in the auto tranny when the throttle cable is pulled.

It's the throttle pressure cable.

I will check my beams tomorrow to see if I have that cable if I do, maybe it is not exclusive to the auto version. I can ask my local garage if you like, they've done the timing belt in the past and were able to order parts so pretty competant bunch.

I couldn't tell you if its Celica specific, mine is in a LHD Celica, throttle cable come from LHD driver's compartment, thru firewall to the engine bay, makes a loop and ends up parallel to the intake manifold. I can imagine that perhaps they could potentially use it for the throttle cable? That makes no sense....hehe....nevermind....
Wierd location for transmission shift cable? Shift linkage would run from front (cockpit....) to the back (engine bay) in the MR2, where as in the Celica the linkage (cockpit....) is all behind (engine bay) the engine
What else could possibly run there to that location?
Does the automatic transmission use a cable, not electronically shifted?
Automatic tranny MR2, that makes me cringe
Could it be some sort of linkage that engages some sort of vavle for hot water/coolant-fluid circulation? As in the hot water/coolant fluid that heats up the throttlebody/intake manifold?

Google "throttle pressure cable" and be enlightened as I was. The shift linkage is right next to the cable as it enters the transmission. It's not that hard to miss in the photos.

It's the Throttle pressure cable, not the shift cable. Two cables are connected to the throttle linkage for a/t motor. I'm using A/T Redtop mated with manual tranny. I had that cable removed, and it goes with the auto tranny.

High-five everyone! But what the hell for? Why does the auto tranny need to know if the throttle cable is being pulled/released? Is that how it "knows" when you let off the gas?

it's for the "kickdown" so when you floor it it drops gear and hauls ass

just installes a AT BEAMS swap and taking off from a dead stop sucks horribly! once it's moving it does go though... nicely too =D
