have you seen a thermostat fail like this?

...Guys i just changed my thermostat, it seemed to have failed the other day on my way to work (long drive -I'm working away from home during the week). Long story short my temps were way to low so kept the revs down and ordered a new TRD thermostat from Fensport as I was suffering very high temps beforehand anyway so it was worth a try. The old (stock one) came out looking like this (it's about 2 years old but the car didn't move for about 6 of those)...

(apologies for the blurred pics, I have a stinking man cold (though not swine flu yet!) so can hardly hold the camera steady)

...I haven't seem a thermostat fail like this in my limited experience of DIY car mechanics. I dunked it in some hot water this evening and when it's hot it seems much harder to open against the spring than when it's cold. My heads a mess at the moment -is this right? I don't think so so.

Anyhow the TRD thermostat sorted my temps out perfect and thanks very much to whoever wrote the coolant bleeding procedure on imoc -it was a doddle :thumleft:

That's interesting -I haven't seen one go like this so kept it for prosperity rather than slinging it over my shoulder straight off.

Was yours a Toyota one? I think mine was, I think my engine's been running hot for a good while though it's running OK.

There's 2 methods of failure, fail to open or fail to close, mine seems to have failed to close at some point but the rubber seals gone straight away so I've had low temps since (it must have "popped" all of a sudden then??).

yeah i assume it was just the original one, car would never get up to temp for a while, so changed it for a c-one one ( say that ten times fast ) and when we pulled the original looked exactly like that, however i did chuck it over my shoulder, which i wish i hadnt now cause we could have started a collection!

There is no standard for Toyota -all their manuals state Ethylene Glycol coolant plus corrosion inhibitor. Whether you use the Toyota stuff (4Life) or any other suitale stuff is up to you. We all change out coolant every 4 or 5 years anyway don't we?

I run 4Life in my GT4 CC circuit and laughed a few times how much I spent at the time for what it is.

Balls, got £40 of 4Life -or had anyway -it's the same as any good stuff -**** even Toyota don't use the good stuff according to their manuals. Besides what coolant brand you use I feel has vey little to do with this post as long as your coolant is doing it's job?

Well I have noticed that when using Toyota RED or the one Honda uses (OEM at least), they seem to keep things nicer inside. Big part of the problem is what kind of water you put in there with it, hence my lack of uses water really. Where my BEAMS resides it's salty, hot, windy, dusty & just generally bad conditions for any engine.....from personal experience, the low-dollar coolant gas stations & mega marts just doesn't cut it. Kills OEM radiators in no time, coolant turns into this cruddy brown fluid.....so it kills everything else as well. Now with running Toyota RED I have noticed that when I do drain my coolant (happened more frequently lately, my Koyo Rad caught a stone off the road & got a leak) it comes out the same color it went it, clear too, no crap in it.
It could all be circumstantial that running the fluid I use in my country just works out best....hey we don't have weather fluctuations down there at all, it's always 85+ degrees F. But still I would imagine it should help to use good grade fluids....its true for engine oil.

My coolant is always brown and dirty (and stinky)
How could I wash it out from the engine as well (not just from the radiator), with the least amount of engine disassembling?
This Toyota Red stuff, do they sell it everywhere (I mean in Europe as well)?

You have to buy it straight from Toyota. I have had the Toyota red come out dirty before. You just have to make sure you clean your system. Run some water though it for a bit till all the water is perfectly clean, and THEN fill it up w/ coolant. You'll thank me

Okay but how exactly?
Just flow drinkwater into the radiator and let it flow out somewhere while engine is running?
And at the end, what's with the drinkwater that left in the engine?

I'd just fillup w/ distilled water, 100% water. Let the engine run for a bit and get that water running everywhere for a bit, drain it, etc. Do that 2-3 times and then fill w/ good coolant.

You really should be changing your coolant every 1-2 years.

I see.
I do change it, the problem is because I haven't changed the engine and the old rusty radiator at the same time, but the engine first and shortly after the radiator. I should have washed it over that time.

(Sorry for going offtopic RST)

I used the Toyota Red coolant also no problem.
I really love the way my engine temp stays constant ,even on the hot days and at traffic lights and idle.
BTW i dont dilute mine.
RST is that the original thermostat that came with the clip ? or did you put a new one in.
Because if its the original who really knows how long it was in a yard without coolant to allow it to rust.

A month ago, my thermostat failed... frozen closed; So ordered a new thermo/gasket, installed/etc... everything's great! ....then last week, hear a slight click, and temps start rising. Play the coasting game to get it home w/o overheating, and eventually hear another click, and temps instantly drop back down to normal. This alternating occurred several times on the way home...

Sticky thermostat? ...failure after jus' 3 weeks? ....is there something besides OEM I should look for?

Hey Richard, how goes it.

I assume you used the Rev3 TRD thermo from Fensport?

I think I've just had failure to open.
