an interesting thought... 2AR-FE???
has anyone thought of trying to swap a 2AR-FE into an mr2?? Its a 2.5 I4 out of the 2009 rav4. Dual vvt-i, 179 hp and 172 lb-ft torque stock in the rav4... maybe with some upgraded cams + exhaust this could be a more powerful n/a option? I dont know if it is even feasible without custom axles / motor mounts, but I figured it was something interesting to think about... lemme know what you think.

I would go 2AZ-FE instead....has more market support because of the kiddies modifying the Scion TC's..... I should read more about stuff before I make my rambling-posts. It looks as tho the 2AR-FE will be replacing the 2AZ-FE? Possibly some swapping between engines & parts gonna happen, at least it seems that way |

2AZ-FE swap
I say we sticky a thread in the general MR2 discussion forum all about asking questions about engine swaps that you have no clue about. |

AR series motors are going to be expensive for a good time to come. An AZ series motor is basically the same concept, and a whole lot cheaper. Plus, no drive by wire.....which isn't all that difficult to deal with, but a hassle.
I wish there was an easy way to get more out of the 2az short of a turbo. Just a random thought, I wonder how much of the 2azfe's lack of power is due to conservative vvti tuning? Vvti should be called "variable overlap" and vtec "variable lift". But if the 2az ecu holds back on the overlap....there might be something to gain with only a controller. I reckon, if it's a fair bit lighter than a 3SGE, and 2.5 litres... awesome for a turbo setup!
Anyone know what its bore/stroke is? Might not be so good for big rpms, but supercharger or turbo setup could end up having the total assembly weigh about the same as an NA 3S ![]() |

Taking a look around, it appears that all the 2az's are driveby wire. I did some work with driveby wire gm's here recently, and it really isn't that big of a problem. Neither is Canbus.
The 2azfe has the same problem as the 5sfe. That crappy crappy FE head. If you could get 200hp+ with cams, exhaust and maybe intake, it could be worthwhile. The 2az sits more upright, so it would be an easier fit into a mk1. |
