Aftermarket Intake on your BEAMS? Do this immediately!!

you guys, add this right before the MAF!!! Even if you have that groovy HKS it SARD unit....it immediately fixed my A/F ratios a whole hell of a lot!!!

If you ever looked at a few MAF units quite a few of them use a wire mesh screen in front of the sensor.

Some say it helps control turbulent air flow, some say its just a screen to keep crap from getting into the motor. I agree with the 2nd part.

A lot has to do with the angle of your piping before the MAF

I do believe this was discussed in another post. Someone mentioned gluing drinking straws together to create a DIY air flow straightener. Something like this would probably give you better results than just a wire mesh.

Stock GM lt1 maf's have a honeycomb screen before the maf. Some maf setups have it, some don't. My guess is baktasht is right that it's there to smooth airflow coming off of a bend. So whether this is beneficial will depend on your intake setup.

Eh??????

My SARD Kit works fine as is thank you. The only thing I use the horrible MAF for is my IAT -the sooner I can get a smaller temp sensor and get rid of it full stop the better as it's just blocking my intake!!!

The SARD kit worked OK for me with stock ECU as well

That would have been ME, in reference to to 'BillZilla.org' doing the same:
http://www.billzilla.org/ae86strawinlet2.jpg

The other end of the spectrum is that the TRD Supercharger kit for the Scion TC also has EXACTLY that installed to the intake/airfilter box as well....so hence my curiosity into the matter

My A/F's were hovering around 15.5 on OEM FPR with custom "free" flowing instake/exhaust. I switched to aftermarket FPR to mess with this a bit, plus intake/exhaust mod needed some 'tuning'
It would get close to pleasing results but not really, hence my re-look into this matter once again.
Saw an old Nissan MAF which had this mesh thing on it. Did it to my BEAMS MAF & IMMEDIATE results.
Smoother idle & rev up, killed some back-firing issues as well!

This might be a little big. I'm sure it can be adapted for this application.

1. Factory intake works well.
2. Mod factory intake
2. Lose power.
4. More time and $$$ to get an intake that works as well as what you started with.
5. ...
6. No profit

Unless using aftermarket ECU, intake is one thing that I reckon is just worth leaving the hell alone.

Note: Am hypocritical in saying this, as I'm using a standard MAF/ECU with a completely different/experimental intake setup. hahaha.

LOL! By the way, is it running yet?
Yeah this is indeed for those of us running (rather stupidly...) an aftermarket intake, or just a free flowing filter....be it because (as in my case, ST184 USDM) the OEM airbox doesn't fit, or because we really "wanted" the Camry intake pipe....and no ECU mods to fix it. It smoothed the hell out of my idle/tip in/on the way to WOT, compared to no screen, using a brand new MAF, and I have my intake pipe coming from down low in front of the radiator going thru where my intercooler used to sit. Might just put the intercooler back just to be a nerd.....
In any event those short ram intakes benefit from this 99 cent mod, take it to a dyno & compare rpms with A/F ratios, believe me later!
