probably common questions....

so if it seems like i didn't use the search button but im doing research before i buy....

so ive got a few questions

where should i start my search for a beams engine?(ive found one on rpm garage just trying to find more then just one option)
what are the most common issues?
are parts available in the u.s.?
are they reliable compared to the regular n/a motor?
ive found that theres a diffrence between the red top and grey top but i could never find anything as to what was the difference.
could i use the transmission from my 5sfe or a 3sgte or can you only use that transmission.

if your going to go on a search button rant please dont even post. im only looking for information about the beams motor not how to use the search button.

k thx

Shop around, make offers on motors even if it is $500 under asking price.

I got mine for $1100 shipped to my door and it is a red top with a helical LSD trans.

Make sure you get a B pipe and that the VVti controller is removed and sent in a secure package. (These break and are not cheap or easy to find) They hang precariously off the side of the motor.

Make sure you get a MAF

I think you need help from a mechanic. Someone who has done this swap before.
The engine is cheap but if you want it to be like a MR2 set up be prepared to pay more.
I is easily done , and done cheap by experienced people.
REMEMBER THIS IS A 10 YEAR OLD ENGINE. If you open her a gasket kit alone will cost you $400 , pumps > $400. Then air box , b-pipe , wiring etc, etc. You WILL spend double the price of that engine.
Look in this forum for swaps and whats needed

thats my importer, ask him about all the sensors are ok, they usually dont carry the maf though,

i would say this, they got my sensor as promised.

if you want to do this swap, which i think is a luck of the draw, once this engine fails it would be cheaper to get another one. mine is clean, but i havent started it yet.

to put on an mr2, you ae looking at harness work, tranny work because you want to put a fwd tranny on a rwd car.

your best bet is to contact chicoraceworks maybe they can hook you up with a clip.

my celica engine will be a straight swap in my celica

@Puretone, what are you on about?
He only has 1beams available and that is a greytop. I personally think he has a monopoly. I have been looking for a beams to get into the UK for ages with cash waiting and yet I email them about shipping; they either do not ship to the UK or they do not even answer.
When I do find a beams that ships into the UK, they want to charge $2500 just for the engine and another $1000 for shipping which is absolutely ridiculous considering even Keith Tau will ship to the UK for $650

So anyone that knows a nice place that will ship to the UK and do not think that beams are made out of gold, can you please contact me?
I am quite desperate to get an engine, I have actually been wanting 1 for 2years and been looking for the past 6months.

p.s. sorry for the topic hijack

You really ought to private-message MANDALAY with "I LOVE SRK, KEITH TAU & RPM GARAGE" and see what he replies to that.....then you'll have yourself an AH-HA!! moment....

If your in the US or Canada, I highly recommend Jhot. They are local and I have been to their location and they are a great company. Highly regret not buying from them, as they include everything, airbox, b pipe, shifter cables, axles. Its pretty much a front clip without the actual metal.

I think you need help from a mechanic.

....my good friend owns his own shop free labor.

Someone who has done this swap before.

........good luck finding someone in houston my research has providied no results so far. also why im researching this

The engine is cheap but if you want it to be like a MR2 set up be prepared to pay more.

.......still trying to plan out the cost. thats why im doing the research before i jump in. and what exactly would i be paying more for(thats the kinda information im looking for.)

I is easily done , and done cheap by experienced people.

.......experienced as far as what? im not sending my car accross the country to do something that i could have my shop do.

REMEMBER THIS IS A 10 YEAR OLD ENGINE.

......yep got it

If you open her a gasket kit alone will cost you $400 , pumps > $400. Then air box , b-pipe , wiring etc, etc. You WILL spend double the price of that engine

......ok id like to know where you got your prices from and please don't say ebay.(link please where would beams parts be available from)

Look in this forum for swaps and whats needed

....again already browsed a bit and used the search button didnt see what i was looking for thx

not trying to attack you mandalay but im looking for information not opinion

im taking all places into consideration rpm garage was already weeded out of my search because of lack of inventory
and id rather not go through ebay but jhot is looking good to me as i can just go pick it up if they will work with me on the price

COST DEPENDS WHAT CLIP YOU BUY AND ITS CONDITION...........Fair
Answer that first.
How can anyone really tell you the costs ?
Is the head gasket , oil , water pumps etc all ok ?
If you get one it will be most likely a celica one. Then you need to buy a b-pipe --- see Servin and the cost. Youll need air box and a bit of retrofiting or if you want it OEM MR2 since i have done this befor , a few times, probably another $2,500 USD on top

All my prices i quoted above are approximate due to the USD ,
i have bouoght at least 3,500 parts for my MR2/beams . I would consider myself an expert at OEM PIECES . BTW Toyota will not order any parts there in the States for you

Summary
tick YES/NO
CELICA CLIP
YES then
air box, hoses
b-pipe
engine mount
fuel line
hoses
harness
Then the other things
Clutch
Flywheel
water pump
oil pump
gasket kit
tensioner
bolts
Reshim
Personally i would love to tell you that it would cost say another $500 but in reality it aint

$1,000 SHIPPING IS CHEAP.
It will cost more than that.
Thats keiths fee on his side only. Then you have to add the cost on your side , brocker , transport, cleaning , taxes/duties etc

.....yeah i know. my dealer had a hookup with the trd distributor in cali but he lost it when they shut down the facility about a year ago. ive been talking to him for awhile he is working for me to get in contact with toyota japan to source parts so will see how that goes.

price isn't as much of an issue as quality. id rather spend 5k on a reliable motor than have a turbo(sorry turbo guys)

i am curious are there not automotive parts houses in japan you know like advance or orielly's here in the states? if there is has anyone thought to check there site and getting it shipped here? has anyone tried this? has anyone found smatching part numbers to these to match any american motors?

You could always build yourself a new engine Which you can as you can get every part. But with gear box would most likely run to about $8000 USD.

Man unless you speak Japanese , or have a friend there your pushing **** up hill.

I should know , i work for a Japanese company.

People like RPM GARAGE scout around for these engines...........

I will have a bottom end for sale in the new year. New engine .

Find a grey top head , then the other pieces and your done.

If you find a MR2 clip i can guarentee you that kieth will charge more than $5,500
before shipping.

BTW DAVE from MR2 WAREHOUSE gets his clips from RPM GARAGE

You already have guys there in the States importing engines , check them out.

Unless you have shipped an engine before man you have no idea all the **** you have to go through. Ship being the operative word.

My engine was $1500, and shipping from Japan to Europe was another $1500, so $1000 is not so bad.
