- Turbo engine lid
- Full respray in wine red/purple.

Modifications post-purchase:

Engine purchased from Japan 21/11/2009
After searching for a red top BEAMS 3S-GE from an SW20 for a very long time I finally came across one so I couldn't let the opportunity pass.

Engine arrives in Australia 06/02/2010
It took awhile for the engine to arrive into Australia but it finally made it.

Engine tear down begins 13/02/2010
I took the day off from my day job and spent some time at my mechanic's workshop pulling the engine apart.

Engine tear down continues 20/02/2010

Red top vs. black top pistons 26/04/2010
My mechanic offered me to use his spare black top pistons instead of fitting the original red top pistons.
Below is a picture comparison:

Head complete & block honed 26/04/2010
My mechanic had the head freshened up and the block honed and cleaned. My only contribution was painting the block black.

Head & block assembled 01/05/2010
The block and head has been assembled with the addition of the SXE10 pistons and ACL race bearings.

Cam cover & exhaust manifold fitted 10/05/2010
I had the heat shield HPC coated through my mechanic's contact. Below is a picture of the exhaust manifold fitted and heat shields fitted.

Fujitsubo Legalis R 10/05/2010
I purchased a friend's SW20 Fujitsubo Legalis R muffler as he had a 3S-GTE conversion done to his 1994 MR2 Bathurst. It's not the best photo and it can use with a nice clean and polish.

Intake Manifold painted & new TOYOTA badge 22/05/2010
I sand blasted the intake manifold and had it painted in Super Red II (factory SW20 colour) and purchased a new TOYOTA emblem.

At the time when the picture was taken I was waiting on a new engine loom as the one that came with the engine was cut and missing a few plugs. This has since arrived and I've fitted it onto the engine. I'm now just trying to source a body loom.

More updates to come soon.

Looking good

Are you going to be running a standalone ECU due to the higher compression?

Why not rewire the engine loom to work with your existing body one? Ordering new harnesses isnt cheap at all from toyota.

Had a really good look at your pic's.
Blew up the pic with cams installed and saw no black compound b/w the top front cam bearing and the head, Maybe he used another color compound
Check that it has been put or it will leak oil

Protok: Thanks man. For the time being I will see how it runs with the stock ECU however I would like to run an aftermarket ECU in the near future. I'm assuming the Greddy emanage would be the most popular choice?

Servin: I guess that's one way of approaching things . I don't really know much about the wiring side of things and I noticed the ECU currently in the car (Generation II 3S-G) only has 3 plugs, one of them being a 26-pin whereas the BEAMS SW20 ECU has 4 plugs. So I automatically thought I'll probably need a new loom.

You're absolutely right about a brand new loom. If I can remember correctly it was around $1000 Australian dollars.

MANDALAY: ha ha the thread is less than 24 hours old

I'll be sure to ask my mechanic about the compound between the top front cam bearing and the head. Out of curiousity would this be the same for the black top BEAMS 3S-G? The reason why I ask is because my mechanic has done quite a few black tops but m engine is the first red top 3S-G he has worked on. A lot of the Melbourne MR2 guys get their work done by him. He is also responsible for my 3S-GTE rebuild last year .

Dam thats right 3 plugs forgot that
You will have to repin the body loom.
I dont remember what ive cut off the loom i have

Compound is used as like on the Black Top.

Who is the builder.

I first used Meridian but it really was just a leggo set and put together the parts.

For this build i used Benica because it is a built engine with forged items and custom built pistons

MANDALAY: Yes 3 plugs for the pre-generation 3 3S-G ECU. So the later model loom would be the way to go I guess.

If the compound is also used on the black top 3S-G to prevent oil leaks then I would suspect my mechanic has used a different colour than black. My mechanic/builder is IDB Automotive. Ian does great work and has also built my brother's 3S-GTE as well as a lot of Melbourne MR2/Celica owners. His friend who used to work with him did my first engine rebuild back in 2005 and I've been going to IDB ever since. I've heard about Meridian but not Benica, I'm assuming Benica is more of a specialist high-end engine rebuilder?

Yes the fuel line is cut so I'm hoping to use my existing one unless it's not compatible. I'll be sure to fit ceramic coated nuts and bolts to the heat shield, we can't have them rusting quickly now

I really should have posted on this forum months ago as I would have been interested in your spare red top pistons! I'm not sure as to what IDB has done with the block and hone vs. piston size. I'll have to ask him when I see him on Saturday.

The fuel lines are different.
BTW i have all the EPC's of every MR2 in the world on my computer.
Can get you the right part number for everything.

Yes Beninca are builders, their speciallity are alfa's but have been building and racing engines for years.
They recalculated my pistons and did a lot of other things that Meridiam wouldnt be able to do.
However they dont deal with Motec , they are autronic. They have a 4 WD dyno and engine dyno.

MANDALAY: Okay, well it looks like I'll have to look into getting a fuel line. Having all the EPC's of every MR2 in the world would be handy. If I need a part number I'll definately get in contact with you .

Beninca sounds very impressive. Have you found yourself a place that can tune your MOTEC? My last tune on my MR2 GT-S was done by e-tuner who operates out of RE Customs but I'm running a Power FC. I was happy with his tune and the car made some decent power.

Melbourne Performance as he is one of only a few that have been approved to tune the MoTec knock sensor module.

MANDALAY: I've heard of Melbourne Performance before, where abouts are they located?

UPDATE:
I've taken some boring pictures of the new loom fitted. I'm still looking for a body loom. I also checked to see if the plugs that fit into the BEAMS ECU from the body are the same on a 1997 MR2 Bathurst but unfortunately they don't fit, so I'm still searching for a side/body loom.

Mandalay you might be able to help me on this one, but would the part number be:

82111-17195?

Pictures below:

Melborne Performance are in Bayswater.
Yes thats the correct number for the body loom.
Ill look at my loom on the W/E and see whats cut.
BUT should point out that even though you use the Beams body loom the dash loom was also changed in the Beams. HOWEVER i just used the Bathurst Dash loom and had to splice some wires.
See the Beams body loom carries 5 wires to the kick panel whereas the Batturst loom it tees off on the fire wall and goes down the center consol.
If i remember correctly gee it was over 2 years ago
Fuel pump.
Air conditioner amp
Taco
and some other items , just cant remember
Here is a pic of another car , see the white plug. You will have that, The beams body loom doesnt have the plug so you have to find those wires in the loom
I had a very good auto electrician find all of them but it did take an hour and i had the spare loom
