Question Extracting Timing Belt

I'm changing my timing belt soon as I await for the belt from Toyota here. As I've seen our BEAMS, the cam gears are different from the Gen 3. Especially the intake side. I'd like to ask those who had the chance to change theirs on the special wrench or tools they've used. To hold the gears while loosening the bolt to remove the cam geats and the crank pulley. I've worked on my old 3sfe and 4age before but I wanted to make sure any important details.

Appreciate any inputs before I'll start working on my BEAMS.

Just cut the belt. Reset the tensioner , align the belt in the same position and pull the grenade pin. No tools required unless you want to get the marks back in TDC , BUT be prepared to turn the crankshaft MANY times

Remove covers & crank pulley. Line dots on cams up and crank gear with mark on block. There should be a way to take tension off the belt, and insert 2.5mm allen wrench to 'pin' the tensioner in place. Slip off/slip on timing belt then reassemble covers.

Ah, so it's got the other tensioner design then. They share the same belt part # tho.

And it's still got a place for a pin to be inserted to hold the tensioner back during replacement...

Appreciate all the inputs guys. I was hoping to change the oil seals behind the cam gears and crank pulley as well. I'm not sure if the variable pin wrench I had will fit to hold off the gears and pulleys while loosening the bolts. Removing the belt and putting it back on is easy as I've done it so many times. It's the gears I'm a bit skeptic about. The pin in the tensioner, that trick I'm aware of. I have a copy of the engine manual for the gen 3
3sge
Appreciate any pix you may have on the special wrench. Thanks!!

Well it depends on how close the cam gears are to the suspension strut.
Oil seals cannot be done in a MR2 with the engine in as there isnt enough space to move the cam shaft forward to clear the seal.
If you have the room take the cam cover off and hold the camshaft with a spanner. With the creankshaft pulley just use a pulley extractor.
But i feel that if that wasnt ever removed before you put the engine in, its going to be very hard because i would bet its all rusted as with every other clip ive seen.

I got the clear picture. Thanks man. And I totally agree on the "rust" thing as these engines have been sitting in the yards for years before it found its way in our engine bay.
