i need a little bit of help. i'm a biiiiiiig beams noob. i've been reading the thread and i've been wondering...where did the name beams come from, when you say red top you do mean the beams motor right? vvti...isn't that pretty much the toyota version of v-tech?

Hi people,

Greetings from Malaysia. I'm new here. I'm sorry I do own a MR2 but I have a 3S-GE Beams inside my 1985 Corona ST150. would like to learn more about this engine from you guys.

We don't care if your an mr2 owner or not, we are a beams redtop group, so you will fit in perfectly. be sure to add yourself to the beams owners list on the top of the main beams forum page.

for what its worth the emanage works differently to other piggy back controllers, where the likes of the safc or camcon might alter the afm signal, the emanage doesnt and actually intercepts and modify's the injector and ignition signals based on a map. theres been good results on them but how they play out long term i dont know.

Thanks very much for the explanation, Edophus. In that case, I'll most probably go ahead with the installation; maybe somewhere next month.

They have them on ebay UK sometimes for decent prices. I can also make one, but that would be more expensive.

I might have to take you up on that soon. First things first.

I found an ECU from an awesome mr2.com poster Tayfin to replace my burnt ECU (acis and throttle system fried). Next, I'll need to look at the current wiring and see if I can get it right into the ECU.

Any suggestions?

I'd have a look round www. imoc. co. uk for those parts, bound to be some around there relatively easy -there's always cars being broken as well if you look in the for sale or affilliates section.

does anybody even have those cams and pistons with rods in a beams engine yet?, im looking for prices. and about the stand alone ecu, is piggyback the same word for standalone

Piggyback is used with the standard ECU and Standalone means getting rid of the Standard ECU and using a entirely different one.

The standalone route is the best route to take with the BEAMS in my opinion!

Yea like Wayno said, a piggyback essentially "grabs" the signals from the engine before it gets to the stock ECU then distorts them accordingly (e.g. changes the shape fuelling curve in one common instance) before passing them on to the ECU. The stock ECU is then "fooled" into thinking the engine's running differently and adjusts accordingly.

It's a relatively crude way of doing things but they work reasonably well in allot of cases, but there are lots of types and they still require mapping -allot of them are near enough the same cost as a standalone at the end of the day (although VVTi enabled standalones suitable for the 3SGE tend to cost a few bucks more, there's dozens available for the non VVTi variants).

They will never be as accurate as a standalone (where the stock ECU is completely replaced). If you're looking at future proofing your build then have a serious look at a standalone (my experience is that they can pull more out of the engine than a piggyback can anyway so the extra cost is worth it). If you're thinking of piggybacks then I would think about cost effective ones and treating them for what they are.

(Just my 2p's worth take on them)
