Cams And VVT-I
Feel free to post any information you have on the stock and Aftermarket modifications to the Cams and VVT-I on the Beams RedTop. The following paragraph will be displayed on the website, so information added to it always appreciated. Want to reword it and add information? Go ahead
![]() VVT-i, or Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence, is an automobile variable valve timing technology developed by Toyota. The Toyota VVT-i system replaces the Toyota VVT offered starting in 1991 on the 4A-GE 20-Valve engine. The VVT system is a 2-stage hydraulically controlled cam phasing system. VVT-i, introduced in 1996, varies the timing of the intake valves by adjusting the timing belt connecting the intake camshaft. A pump applies hydraulic pressure to adjust the gear driving the timing chain. The Beams Redtop VVT-I controlls the intake cam only, unlike its sister engine, the BlackTop which has Intake and Exhaust Cam VVT-I. We are looking for information on the stock cams, such as stock lift and duration. Difference between these cams and other 3s-ge cams (like the vvt-i holes). Any information on aftermarket cams would be very usefull. I know TRD made a very limited quantity which are not for sale anymore. Anyone know these cam durations and lift for them? Anyone know the cam grinds or rewelds other people are using? |

TODA POWER & HKS IN JAPAN MADE CAMS FOR THE 3SGE NOT SURE IF THIS WAS DONE FOR THE 3SGEVVTI. IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO GET THE CAMS YOU COULD CONSIDER A CAM CONTROLLER(vvti controller or vtech controller) CONTACT HOPUP RACING # 7609422503 OR CHECK THIER WEB PAGE THEY SELL A CONTROLLER (NAME CAMCON mfg by power enterprise)

Ive actually been trying to find some information on a Camcom for awhile now, especially some before and after dynos.
I went to my local autobacs and they said Toda and HKS made cams for the 3SGE but you would lose your VVTI if you switched them out which would basically make the engine a fancy 3SGE. The problem that im finding is getting aftermarket billet cams that is VVT-I enabled. (FYI, its considered yelling by using caps lock on forums) ![]() |

Hey Phoenix,
I can get custom billets for almost anything, and duration/lift profiles all i need is a set to look at. The problem with billets however is the need to purchase a set amount and that amount is 100....so you can just imagine what the cost on that would be like. |

A reduced base circle cam grind seems like the best solution, the engine builder here in NZ (Who was hired by toyota) was getting 240-250hp with standard cams that were reground, in the Altezza touring cars.

as far as money is concerned, yeah.....regrinds is the way to go. I just didnt want to go that route. I would rather everything in my engine be new.

Nothing old about them....they are just grounded down. I just don’t trust rewelds...Toyota puts a hardening layer on their cams that when you weld on them it removes that layer and thus removing the Toyota reliability. I can do regrinds as well as you probably know already. |
