The gearing isn't very good for the beams. The e153 is really for a motor with a bit more torque. Also, the e153 is a good bit heavier, and then you have the hub compatibility problem.

The stock s54 works well with the beams.

BTW, where did you find your motor, and where are you located?

Well there's a shop about an hour north of me in Jersey that's selling one, but it's a little bit high for me right now (2200 for motor, ecu wiring harness and auto trans) There's a couple shops I contacted in the philly area that say they'll have some in the summer say june/julyish

kind of a noob question but anyone know the durability of the s54? in terms of how much power/torque it's good for. And just as a thought would cryotreating the gears help or is the metal not a good candidate for it? I'm sure nitriding would be possible.

The s54 is used with turbos and v6's pretty commonly. The gearing the 91 s54 comes with is not very good for the V6 or turbo, but the transmission will hold up just fine.

200hp and 155lb/ft or torque is well within the s54's capabilities.

Besides, the s54 is much cheaper.

true that, i had my boosted '92 5SFE running about 265HP and about 235ft/lbs for about 2.5 years with no hassle from the trans EVER! I dismantled the trans after swapping my RedTop and noticed it was in near new condition @ 48.000 miles

The s54 is not a weak transmission. The c52 on the other hand will barely survive to 200hp.

well that's good to know. As far as getting the tach to work anyone have the part number needed for the "rev counter mechanism"? I've got a usdm 91 NA mr2 if that helps.

out of curiosity, i saw the previous posts talking about itb's on the beams. anyone know how to get the adapter/how much it costs?

I gave my old man a buzz regarding the tacho problem, and he got it working with an oscilliscope, and all of $2 worth of parts.

I'll have to get him to draw me a circuit diagram or something of how he did it!

Now, all we need is a good place to get ecu's.
Really? I thought that 5S headers fit GenII 3S motors but didnt fit GenIII and Beams motor as the ports are much bigger. Also i would never put a chinese built SSACrap on my Beams there are much better headers out there like the ever impossible to find Hotshots those would be great for the beams 4-1 design with some long runners oh i agonize that i cant find a pair ...

The 5s headers do not fit. I looked at substituting a 5s header early on as a cheap way to fix the exhaust fab problems, and as a substitute for the Caldina cat in header unit.

The ports don't line up, and the bolt holes are all different. Read a few posts down, you'll see where we figured this out.

Although of course if you're running a turbo gearbox (Which I dont reccomend) You need a clutch disc to suit an E153 gearbox.
That means a 3SGTE flywheel and clutchcoverplate will fit on the 3SGE Beams? That's awsome! So I can just buy any 3SGTE wheel and plate ... if I use a clutch disc that will fit my gearbox? I can't believe it More opportunities..
