Yes, that's a good idea, I've started to sum up... maybe you guys can check it! I'm no native english speaking person, my mother tongue is german, so I may make some mistakes. Please also check if it is technically correct!

I'll make a report on my swap. In a few weeks I'll have time and my greytop engine ready So I can do some documentary... I'll be using a phoenix header, 3sgte flywheel with 3sgte pressure plate and a 3sge clutch disk. a s54 gearbox.... maybe we can put such stuff on the redtop site, and do some linking... how to work around certain problems... what ever.

The redtop tale

The redtop 3SGE not as rare as many people think, it can also be found in cars
like the Caldina GT and Rav4, having a grey rocker cover on top of it! Yes, the
3SGE greytop!

It's absolutely identical to the redtop engine. The one and only difference is the
grey cover and a header with build in catalytic converters.

Engine
How to build up a "redtop" from a greytop?

Change the greytop header to some proper header, you can go for the stock Toyota
Header (Part No. ????) or order a Phoenix's Power header from Taka Kaira Inc. Japan (Part No. 76592 5 bolts)
Doublecheck this, there is also a 6 bolt header available, be sure your engine has got
5 bolts at the exhaust side. If not, order the 6 bolt version.

Depending on the car it was taken out, you may have to change the flywheel also -
if it has been an automatic transmission car.

Flywheel and Clutch
You can use a 3SGTE flywheel and pressure plate. You need to use a clutch disc which fits
to the input shaft spline of you gearbox. If you're using a E153 gearbox, you can use the
3SGTE clutch disc, if you're using a S54 or S53 gearbox, you have to
use a clutch disc taken from a 2gen or 3gen 3SGE.

And of course you can use the 3SGE flywheel and clutch.


As the greytop has less power due to it's restrictive header and different programmed ecu,
you need to order a redtop ecu (Toyota Part No. 89661-17561) aprox 700$ (as of today).
You may also use a ecu for automatic transmission, by pulling down "nsw" neutral
switch port to ground.
