When you take the cams off you should see the "buckets". These sit on top of the valves.
Under theses you should see the "shims", in the case of the beams, under bucket type as the motor potentiall revs higher and more prone to spit the shims out if over bucket like in the 4age. The just small looking metal buttons which sit on the valve stems. If you remove them you should see the top of the valve. Get special valve spring compressor tool and press down on the spring and cap. The locking collets should then come/drop out. The valve can now be freed. BTW Have you got your redtop beams info translated yet??? I have access to some toyota beams info in terms of wiring diagrams etc, but my contact has yet to sort out a engine workshop manual. TEX |

Do you have the wiring diagram translated? Because i don't yet. Im not going to be translating the manual because its way to much work and i don't have the knowledge to do it (my japanese still sucks).
I should be getting the manuals in the end of next week or so, for some reason, it takes a month to get. |

Dave, if you don't have or cant get a spring compressor there is another ghetto way to do it. It works just fine but is a little easier to lose the keepers this way.
Take a 14-15mm deep socket, put the socket part on top of the spring. Take a hammer and hit it. This will compress the spring for a split second and shoot out the keepers, freeing up everything. The spring will just pull off and the valve will slide out the bottom of the head. |

Why oh why are you pulling your valves out? haha.
I hope you keep them in order, and with the right buckets and shims in order too. Shims make the valve sit so it's just perfectly sealing against the head. They measure how much clearance you need, and then find the right sized shim to put under the bucket. The bucket is what the cam profile hits into. BTW the only reason I'd think about pulling the valves out would be to replace the intake side valves with titanium altezza ones, unless you're going all out for mega HP. If you're turboing it, I probably wouldnt bother. Also touching the head is the one thing that I DIDNT want to do with my engine. It's too fiddly IMO, I left that bit to the pros. |
