aftermarket cams for BEAMS?

Hey, I'm in the process of buying a 91 MR2 with the BEAMS redtop in it. It needs valvetrain work (possibly a bent valve), but i figure while I have it apart that i should put some upgraded cams in it. Where is a good place to get cams for this motor? How much am I looking at for cams? Thanks

Hi,

You have 2 options for Beams Cams.

1. Having your original cams reground. The only company that I know of which has experience with Beams cams, is brashboy.net in Japan. These will probably cost you in the $600 - $800 dollar area. You will also have a big chance of you cams blowing up on you. Regrounds are notorious for failing after an x amount of miles. Why people trust them, I don't know.

2. Glenn in Australia has custom cams that you can purchase from him. They are billet cams and are the only aftermarket choice. If you want to talk to him more about them, them, his mr2.com nickname is celica_ra45. Fair warning, custom parts are not cheap.

then there is the other option, why do you need custom cams? Our cams are variable timing which mean they are constantly moving. Custom cams will not really gain much power if thats what your looking. They will help with full engine builds, but for the cost, I don't see the benefit. Thats just my opinion.

just signed up in the BEAMS page... I figured it would give a pretty descent power gain, but if it doesnt then i wont bother. Are there any upgrades in there that would be easy to do while I have it all apart. Reguardless I have to take it apart, so I figured i might as well try to give her a little more grunt (without compromising reliability/durability). Thanks for the reply.

Glenn can give you a straight answer with the cams tonight on whether he thinks it will help you or not. Personally, i would go with some phoenix power headers, a little spendy, but from the reviews I've read, well worth it.

I'm not sure if it has headers on it or not, judging by the stock heat sheild i'd say the headers are prolly stock, but i know it has an HKS system from there back at least.

Phoenix, is it at all possible that you could get the spec on the brashboy re-grind???

I was looking at having a 'fast road' cam made up in billet as I think
celicara45's cams are gonna be a bit to aggressive for what i'm aiming for.

My only option at the moment would be to buy the brashboy re-grinds and then send them to newman cams to have them copied in billet.

my cams arent as aggressive as you think .my motor still idles like its std but you cant move the cam controllers as much with the more lift and more duration ,plus you need new valve springs to match as well ,not just cams im afraid same with any other cam

Hey Celica do Blacktop cams fit the Redtop?

inlet will but it will be the same profile as your motor plus they use 6 main bearing caps for the cam .not 5 like your motor

Ah i see i was asking because Toda makes some cams for the Blacktop and was wondering if those could be another aftermarket cam possiblity.

i ues the toda cams then grind my profile on them .the trd and toda are 2 aggressive ,the last exhaust i bought from them marked up because it wouldnt fit onto a 33 mm bucket ,so i dont think they even test there own cams to see

I see i thought you used TRD but didnt know you used the Toda ones. That crazy to hear cause the Toda cams arent cheap for them to not be tested properly.

Hi celicara45 what sort of performance gains are you getting over stock cams on the red top..and how much are your cams??

inlet is 1000 aussie and exhaust is 500 aussie .valve springs to suit 750 aussie and your cam controller modified is 300 change over
all plus postage
you donrt have to modify any thing put valve springs in and then cams plus you have to do cam control as well and go from there .plus you would need bigger injectors as well

while you are doing the work on your cams i would highly recommend getting the head flowed as well.
