Valve clearance Red-top beams

Hey all,

Found the problem with the engine, some debris has moved the timing belt 5 teeth resulting in 8 inletvalves busted, together with 8 dented valve lifters... Oh the joy of racing...

Anyway, we've sourced all the necessary parts and are currently refurbishing the head and need an urgent answer on the following question:

How much valve clearance does the BEAMS have/need? I know some of you have manuals so I hope that you can help us out... We need to have it all running and cleared before the friday so that we can finish our season...

Thanks for the help on this one!

Can I ask what valves you found to work with the Beams head?

I'm not sure what you mean with this question, but we have been able to source these through a friend who also races a beams.

Not sure where they came from, so I'm actually not really able to answer this. What I do know is that the valves are special as well, 5.5 mm valve stems and longer than normal Toyota valves....

I was just curious if they were an aftermarket valve like ferrea valves and what model number you guys used.

I will see if I can't find the info you need to complete your head work.

If I ever find out where these came from, I'll let you know, but I'm afraid that that might not happen... (you know how it is between racers)

Thanks for your help on this, it is much appreciated!

Hey he said that his timing belt moved and caused damage to his valves. Doesn't that mean that the BEAMS is interference contary to popular belief that it isn't interference.

The engine is stock and the non-interference thing is a myth. The inlet valves do get hit by the pistons!! Check the wiki on this subject, it even explicitly states the same... Toyota 3S-GE engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So do check your timing belts or you'll end up with 8 crushed valve lifters (is that the correct word?) and bent valves.....

I got the data I needed after digging in the forum, but thanks for the help on this.

And Mandalay, the valves have been sourced by one of our direct competitors, and he was willing to sell these to us at a fair price... I guess that's enough backscratching, I can't expect him to tell all of his secrets...

Ferea makes valves for everything, even extraterrestrial UFO engines. The guy that flows heads around my area (freaking serious alien knowledge of the head flow business...) has told me in the passed that ferea makes pretty much any size/shape valves on the planet....

Oh don't you just love exotic engines, yet another 1 million dollar question:

How much torque should put on the head bolts? The clearance has been guestimated and should work. When re-building the engine, can we use the torques stated for the normal 3-SGE? Or can anybody inform me of the BEAMS info on this???

Again... urgent.... HELP!

probably higher than the original 3S-GE, I agree its a pain with these exotic engines to find these things out. Are you using OEM head bolts?

Jep, we try to stick to OEM as much as possible...

case in point, mitsubishi evo's and their tank engines that just wont blow up at 30+ psi of boost!
