I have been confused about Quads.
Can the stacks / like the stock ones be enclosed then receive its air from the standard air box ?Can something like that be customed made. If i only did this would l have to upgrade injectors / full pump ? How much gain would l get. Stock Throttle body has heating these dont will it cause problems ? As it has the idle control what happens with ITB's. Computer ? So you have Motec and claim idle is stable would this definitely be the case if l went ahead. |

Here's a pic or two (hopefully he doesn't mind me posting them): 2. Injectors maybe, fuel pump shouldn't be necessary (refer to #3). Injectors depend on how much difference they make on your particular motor after tuning. 3. ITB's won't make huge gains by themselves afaik. Not over stock components. You'll make some gains, simply because it will flow much better. But, you'd have to match them with cams/exh/ect. The motor as a whole would need to be considered and tuned. What they will do, is give you awesome throttle response/control. And probably also give a nicer midrange, but peak hp won't change a whole lot - I think. 4. Heating throttle bodies is a non-issue unless you live in a cold enough climate that the throttle body has the potential to freeze shut. From what I can tell all the 20v 4ag w/ITB's don't have one of these 'heating' circuits, but I may be wrong on this one. 5. Low speed idle will be stable, thats just a matter of tuning. If you want a 'warm-up' or high idle initially you'll need a stepper motor idle control run by the ECU/Standalone/Piggyback. Tapped into the throttle bodies behind the butterfly's. Angelo, there might be an issue on the MR2 with clearances at the rear firewall with air boxes though there does look plenty of room looking from the top. Hopefully we're going to take my stock manifold off and dry-fit a set of itb's to measure clearances tail end of next month. For me that's going to determine whether it's socks, a sausage filter or an air box.
...there's some theories / guidelines for working out dimensions for air boxes -I'll look them out. |

Have you guys considered building a manifold with a nicely radiused turn (90 deg or more) to face the ITBs upwards. very much like the stock redtop manifold, but instead of the plenum the trumpets of the ITBs would be in that location. That might even allow easy use of the stock ST/BT throttle linkage.
Although, I don't know how feasible that would really be as I don't know if there is enough clearance upwards to the hood. Andrew |
