Converting 98 UK SPEC Gauge cluster
I have a UK spec NA cluster from 98 model MR2 which is basically
a Beams cluster but with MPH and KPH and non DI tach.. Now i know MSD makes tach adapter but anyone know of another Toyota model with DI that will work so i can swap out tach module ..Im old and anal about the details ..lol I dealt with issue with 1mz swap just haven't look much for 4cyl unit. Doing Beams swap soon on 95na and just wanted to get side stuff done.. BTW anyone have complete MR2 Beams airbox..used or can source new one ..will pay for 100% complete unit..YES i know i can just use a filter and camry intake but want oem parts only.. |

You *might* just be fine with the '98 tacho....I have a feeling they use similar set of resistors on the tacho-gauge....I think the new gen gauges are all similar to the BEAMS resistors on the tacho. No need for MSD Tach driver thingy
Now this is what I did on an old ST184 Celica with 5SFE, I swapped in the BEAMS & the gauges cluster belonging to it: ST184 to ST202 BEAMS Dash Tacho: The Tacho is the grey wire on the BEAMS and the black wire on the 5SFE but you wont beable to get it working as the BEAMS Tacho pulse runs off the coil packs and therefore sends out a different signal that my original guage cluster can not read! To fix this issue MSD Ignition have a Tach Adaptor that will change the signal, I have mine on order and will let you know how it goes. GOT IT WORKING!!! Beams is a voltage triggered tacho! I connected the MSD ignition adaptor up to the relevent wires and bingo it worked right away!! From BEAMS Red Top Conversion Into ST184 Write-Up |

I remember you saying that now, come to think of it.....Was yours a 5SFE one or 3SFE/3SGE-Lame-Edition? I would like to see the inner workings of your Tacho if you have it laying about, I bet it's just missing that one extra resistor....that resistor I am talking about is $0.08 at your local electronics place, radioshack etc.... |

I've got my original air box. Only thing is one of the clips has broken, but that's the bottom half and it looks a bit like another one I have (the top bit with the MAF mount is fine I think) -I'll dig out the 2 air boxes and have a look for you.
If you're in the UK you can have them if they're any use? I dunno about the tacho -I had mine swapped out of the donor G-Ltd. I didn't think any of the normal 3SGE tacho's would work straight off though. |
