If it's close to you, get a good look at it, check under oil filler cap & oil on dip stick, check to see if you can get a compression test, look for general wear & tear on hoses, wires etc. See if they can do a startup for you, or startup garantee. I have a RedTop in my ST184 Celica, that's the 1992 GT model. I am not very sure if the engine/transmission mounts & mounting points are all the same, I remember discussing with another member about this as well, who was putting a BEAMS in his 7AFE powered car.....I'll try and find/remember. Driveshafts as well was another hiccup along the way....not sure if they were direct fit or if the GT (5SFE) shafts were needed, be prepared to go junkyard hunting.... Apart from fitting the engine to mounting points, the wiring can be a bitch, unless you have some good experience with this or have someone that can do it. Get an upgraded fuel-pump while you are at it! |

Not a bad find but pity the crossmember is not with it as you will need this to mount it into your vehicle. The A and S series engines are quite different and you will need to modify chassis mounting as well. Using what is supplied it should mostly mate up with what you already have in your vehicle. The wiring is another issue though and pretty much something that has to be done with ALL engine conversions so nothing major compared to other swaps.

I wired for a 95 Celica ST swapping to a gen3 3sge a while back. The guy got the crossmember from a celica gt 5sfe car in the junkyard. He grabbed all of the mounts, and bought a set of 5sfe axles.
All the mounts fit. He had to drill 2 new holes on the passenger side frame rail for the motor mount. He modded his shift linkages to work. He probably should have gotten the Celica GT radiator, but was able to make the ST radiator work ok. From my perspective, the wiring wasn't all that bad. His motor came with a cut harness. With the ST, it didn't seem like getting a complete GT wiring harness would help that much. |
