98 Beams MR2 Hard to start when engine warm
Hi,
I recently purchased a 98 Beams MR2 with the clutch gone. I replaced the clutch and started using the car to find an erratic idle issue, high/low revs @ idlle and stalling at junctions. I bled the system with the two hoses attached. At the same time cleaned the two sensors/switches that are mounted on the intake (beside the butterfly). Unsure which one of these cured my idle problem but hey its cured, now idles perfect. My problem now is that after the car is turned off after any type of journey the car doesnt start right: eg: Go to work 7:30am - start car at 10:00am to find car turning over slightly slower than norm but not even tyring to fire. Car will then start after about 10 - 20 sceconds turning over. This same thing happens after 20mins cooling after a journey. When the car is left over night it starts first turn. Car is suffering no other issues apart from possible battery drain after 2weeks of not being used. I have checked fuel lines to find nothing exposed to exhaust heat. ECU light never been an issue either. Jumpered the diagnostic port at TC E1 to find nothing stored. Any help or advice given will be much appreciated. Your MAF might be on it's way out by now. Check the signal wires from the MAF, they should have a specific resistance on them & change in resistance in temperature changes (blow cold/hot air at it). Check on google for Toyota MAF resistance measure or something, I found it too way back when. Next you wanna try by cleaning out your throttlebody completely. Remove it from the intake & take it apart, carefully. Most likely it's the Idle Control Valve being either full of gunk & oil residue, from sitting in a warehouse too long. Take it apart & clean it out with some good gunk cleaner (lol). Reassemble. Win. |

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Will the MAF cause the following after engine warm: Straight after turning car off after a drive car will start fine upto 1hr later. 2hrs after turning warm engine off car turns over plenty fast enough. But will not start unless you have 2 or 3 atempts turning over for aprox 10 seconds. Car left over night starts first turn. In relation to the idle this is sorted since i cleaned the valve on the throttle body. I replaced the battery which cured the slow turning over problems.
