About to be a beams owner.

let me introduce myself. I have a celica convert. 6th gen, been a member but almost never posted, hang around 6gc.net most of the time.

been cruising the boards for a while. Im ready to buy a beams, and become part of the registry. seems this is the place to be to get knowledge.

However before i commit to something i want to make sure details.

It will go into a 6th gen celica.

there are a lot of engines for sale.

But i have read these are must haves..

AFM,
tachometer, (or adapter)
Harness of course
Intake, exhaust,
engine itself,

is there anything im missing that i need to look for. (yeah besides low mileage)

the difference between a clip and an engine is a lot of possibly missing parts.

thanks in advace

Most clips for sale are from Celica's. Missing parts are usually air box , charcoal canister.

RedTop BEAMS is either out of an SW20/1 MR2 or ST202 Celica <---6th Gen, should be even easier for you....my guess is it will be super easy if you get a Celica BEAMS clip & if you're engine *was* a 5SFE....I'm not sure if the 6th Gen Celica with the 7AFE is a headache to get an S-series engine into or not.

CORRECTION:
You have the 6th Gen Convertible eh? So you could only have either the 3SFE or 5SFE in that engine bay. Dude getting the RedTop BEAMS in there will be a walk in the park for you!!!!
Don't worry about the Tacho, it will probably work fine without any mods.
Just make sure you get the UNCUT wiring, ECU, MAF, O2 Sensor....possibly the tranny would be nice too, might be younger & better shape than yours....see if it's got the LSD! Everything else should be super simple

oh hey wats up njccmd2002. so i see your really looking into getting the beams! thats awesome.

Ok say let me get this straight about the helical lsd that came on the s54 transmission. Did all Redtop Beams come with helical lsd. Or did helical lsd come in ss-III celica's, and ss-II celica's got viscious lsd tranny's right??

ok so let me see if i got this right??:

S54 - 06A Helical
S54 - 06D Viscious

as far as i know

S54 - 06A Helical
S54 - 06D Viscious

6 months will be my goal to have the engine in the bay working.

if you have all the necessary parts it should take you all of one weekend....that's how long it took me to get mine in the bay & running...after a snafu with the driveshafts

hey, where can i find a MAF adapter for the beams, i have seen some beams have the MAF in the box, but i would like to go with aftermarket intake.

Where can i find the hks adapter.

i found this, 99-02 TOYOTA CAMRY SOLARA V6 AIR INTAKE SYSTEM 00 01:eBay Motors (item 370251767788 end time Sep-26-09 17:28:31 PDT)

but i would like to keep it as a CAI set up, would it be ok?

Yes.
Just make sure BEFORE you install that eBay piece to measure the diamter of the pipe & make sure it is the *eXaCt* same diameter as the OEM part.
These eBay MAF pipes tend to be a bit shotty when it comes to exact specs.

HKS MAF pipe for the RedTop BEAMS? Good luck....

why could it no be 2.5 in diameter, would it be bad. the problem is that most of ebays engines that are worth it, don come with air filter or MAF

Would there be a problem if i dont have the stock airbox, and where is the charcoal canister located at?

^^^^^^^^^ not a problem, cannister is there for emissions.
stock airbox is not 1000000% necessary either, just make sure you have OEM MAF ( & pipe, unless you get eBay 1MZ-FE one...)

I'm in the same boat as njccmd2002... I hope I get everything. 3 other questions:

How much should I expect to pay for a BEAMS? (I saw a set sell for less than 2K with 20k Miles on it and free shipping but the rest are close to the price of a 3sgte which I think is insane for a n/a with less horses and harder to find parts)
Is it true that all BEAMS come with LSD (either helical or viscious)?
and all the sensors needed are attached to the engine right?

just debating wether to buy a clip (more money) or be able to make it with those engines sets on ebay.

^^^ that is my engine to be. It should be home by tomorrow, but wont be installed until december.

You have to pick up the phone and ask.

1. B-pipe
2. throttle brackets
3. No broken sensors
4. AFM
5. it could be either helical or viscous (look at the plate)
6. Un cut wire loom
7. ask, ask,

I figure my engine was 1350, plus 300 shipping, plus 150 residential delivery (liftgate).

Why beams, no hassle of turbo dude, best NA for celica apart from V6. Parts will be available soon, as same history with 3sgte.

use your judgement, you want to hear my judgement, I will be buying an auto beams very soon , keep the block, sell all the other parts, and keep it for a rainy day!!!!!

I'd say the beams holds its own against the v6 depending which v6 we're talking about. There was a guy claiming a low 14sec 1/4 that I had done the wiring for. That's pretty respectable.

I plan on putting one in my mk1 mr2. That should be good for mid to low 13's. We'll see.

Yeah I've called and read as much as I can. When I called though, the retardos at the other end could not tell me anything about the engine other than that it worked. COuldn't tell me if it was a celica they got it from, what year, didn't have the plate or AFM n misc. parts yet they wanted a lot more than what you paid. Where did you order yours from anyway?

The valve for the charcoal canister is there , the air box ( has the MAF ) and the ECU ?
Check out the compression and if its ok its up to you what to do next. Install as it is or if you open her up for auxilliaries ( water pump, oil pump etc ) you will start to add $ to an engine that you got at a very good price.

japs star motors?? lol those are the guys I was going to get that engine from. I emailed them on ebay several times about that BEAMS and they wanted me to call them. They didn't seem to want to put anything in writing about the engine so I was a little worried. By the time i called they sold it to you lol so 1350 plus 450 shipping?? yeah that sounds about right but I think now they want more for the other ones. Did they send you the AFM cuz they told me they didn't have it...
