HELP!! mr2 not running :[

Posted 06-15-2009 at 08:41 PM by 420mr2
okay, so I have a 1991 mr2 na, with about 227k miles on it. I was trying to install my radio, and in the process I blew some fuses for the dome lights (didn't diconnect battery, i know, i know) but anyway in the process of replacing those I blew more fuses because my fusebox was loose and touched on a metal piece.

those fuses i didn't replace yet, and they were for my gauges, so my h/c gauge, battery, and rpms all weren't working.

so, long story short, I was at taco bell in baldwin park and in the parking lot i noticed my coolant was leaking. so, i decided to let it cool for a good long time and then drive it home to diamond bar (about 20ish miles). it overheated, and now something is wrong with my engine. it has no power (not even enough to drive anywhere) and it's detonating. it shakes when it idles, but when you hit the gas it dies, or starts detonating.

I doubt that I blew my engine, bc I saw no smoke from the exhaust, engine, or crankcase,

but something is seriuosly wrong and I'm clueless.

any ideas?

Sounds like a head gasket, a little water in your fuel/air mix throws things off pretty bad. The head can warp pretty quick when you overheat, and you can overheat bad driving with no coolant.

A head gasket is not the end of the world. I used to have a Honda that I drove for 3 years on a bad head gasket. I'd just fill up the radiator every 150 miles and wonder where the water was going. This method is a pain, and not recommended for anyone except poor college students.

The quickest test is to fill up your coolant, start the engine and see if the exhaust smells sweet like antifreeze. The book method is compression test each cylinder. If your compression is low on two adjacent cylinders you've found the problem.

Thanks...I'll check out the gasket, but now I have more problems, like...my car won't start. Now I'm leaning more towards electrical, i.e. the alternator, bc now my brand new battery is dead. i took it to a shop, they said 1/2 of my engine is getting no electrical. I just hope it's not a gasket + electrical problems,

it sucks bc it's my daily driver, but i guess I get to learn a lot about cars now :]

thanks for the help...

btw how do I start my own thread, so the majority of users will see it?
