PCV Problems

Posted 07-18-2009 at 12:14 AM by whipit
I recently purchased a '91 MR2 Turbo that is having some issues. A little bit of history:

This car was not purchased stock and has the following modifications that I can tell. Here is what I know is currently on the vehicle.

After Market Huge F*** off Turbo (Not sure what it is though)
Stock Intercooler
4" Intake pipe
NGK Spark Plug wires
ApexI Super AFC
HKS Vien Pressure Converter
Greddy Boost Controller PRDFEC-v
Jspec Engine control ST135
ApexI Super Ignition Timing Converter
After market waste gate and bov

Problem 1:
When I first bought this vehicle the PCV hose was connected to a breather filter. I purchased the Intake pipe and rerouted it back into the intake. The problem is that the PCV is blowing lots of smoke/oil, more than what I think is normal. When I pull the intake tube and hot-pipe there is oil residue.

1. Is this normal?
2. If this is not, then what would be the cause(s) of the blowby?
I pulled all the spark plugs and they were not fouled, and it is not blowing smoke out the exhaust. This is why I think that the rings are not the culprut.

When I received the car there was too much oil in it (completely overfilled), which I believe is leading to some / most of these issues. I immediately drained and changed the oil, and filled it to the proper specifications. I just don't know how long the car was driven in this state.

Problem 2:
Each time that I get into boost, the car stutters. When the car is relatively cool I am able to get into higher boost without it stuttering. As the temperature of the engine increases, the less boost I am able to get into before the engine starts to cut out. I am not sure whether it is cutting fuel, spark, or both.

3. Could the issue(s) with the blowby be causing or have inpact to these boost problems.

4. I have no doubt that the engine is not tuned properly, but am unsure of how to tune it given all these all modifications.

Does anyone have any advice / specifications or manuals for the above listed aftermarket pieces.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

the oil residue is completely normal being that it is a turbo'ed car the turbo is a mechanical part and no matter how hard you try when that turbo is really working its going to release some oil.ok as far as thats concerned check your spark plugs to see if they have black burn marks on them if so then then your o2 sensor is reading the vehicle at wrong temps sending too much fuel into the chambers causing it to stutter under high turbo pressure if that doesent work then you might want to change out your mass air flow sensor. and the only way to (properly) tune your vehicle is to take to a pro shop where they can take a better look at your vehicle at your (modifications) so they can put them into their computer so they can (flash) your ecu.
