BC Adjustable Coilovers
Hello everyone,
A week ago I got an AW11. Impressive vehicle! I am currently evaluating options on upgrading the suspension. I have read some threads here and searched on ebay. There I found these: BC Adjustable Coilovers "NEW " TOYOTA MR2 AW11 1986 - on eBay, also Suspension Components, Performance Tuning Parts, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 03-Oct-08 03:03:10 BST) It says it is BC for the AW11. I know BC produces suspension solution for the ZZW30, but never heard it does the same for the AW11. Has anyone seen these before? Is anyone using them? Thanks! |

edit: I spoke with a guy who had them installed (he brought them from the same guy) and he seemed happy with them. Personally I was going to get he Ground Control coilovers and put my Konis in them but with the aussie dollar so low the coilovers where something like $2400 without shipping and tax! These ebay ones are $1100 complete. I brought them to fix my King springs because I'm not happy with how they sit, the front in 10mm higher and the steering is too light at high speeds. Fingers crossed that these coilover last a bit of time. If they are no good I will just wait for the US dollar to drop so I can get some Ground Controls. I'll update once I have them installed, I have an '86 SC. Last edited by aw11sc; 12-23-2008 at 08:51 PM. |

Here's some pics of the BC/BR (street/autocross apparently) ebay coilovers... not to be confused with the Buddy Club ones! I'm pretty impressed with the build to be honest, but I'm no expert.

Got them installed yesterday but hasn't been aligned or setup as it was. My steering is heavier than it was before... but it was very light before. At the moment I've getting a clunking noise and the steering seems to "bite" as you start to turn it. Hopefully when I take it to the suspension place in a day or two that will be sorted out.
edit: so I had to go on a long drive out to my parents today. Out of the city and into the country and... ouch! I'm back now and my neck hurts and my GF has vowed never to travel that far in my car again. My 2 isn't a daily but I do take for a long run now and then and I do come across some bad roads where I am and well... I didn't realise how much of an effect they would have. At this stage I'm looking at getting the ST or Eibach pro-kit to stick with my old Koni yellows. Sure I will give it a week or two before I make up my mind but I thought the "soft" setting would at least give some comfort. Last edited by aw11sc; 01-10-2009 at 07:43 AM. |

So I fixed the clunk which turned out to be a loose tie rod bolt and then took it for a run without a whinging passenger and WOW. I'm really impressed with the difference around corners. It was good before but its so chuckable now. Shame I only get to run around the street because its begging for an autocross course. Now, if only I can weigh off the lack of "street comfort" with that I will be very happy with them!

Well...I turned them to soft when I took the 50 minute country run and basically my passenger won't go with me again in my car. Plus I came back and my neck was a bit sore. But I'm getting use to them now after a few days. They are OK on the street but I wouldn't consider it comfortable. It all depends on the roads in your area. How far you need to drive and other things. To be honest these coil overs turn the car into a circuit car. I wouldn't consider these if your two is just a daily street car. I would stick with Koni/ST or Eibachs in that case. Personally only get to drive mine on weekend. |

So I had the wheels aligned today. Front has 1.5 and 1mm toe out, back has 2 camber and 1mm toe in and its feeling much better. The small "drift" streeting I was having has gone now and the car is handling well, no more clunks and the steering isn't too light or heavy. I'm pretty impressed so far and I'm actually getting use to the ride quality. I think its a small price to pay for the new WOW factor. So I would recommend them if other coil overs are out of your budget and you're willing forgo any kind of "comfort level"

Since someone had already started a thread regarding the BC coilovers, I thought it best to continue it.
I just saw a thread on these on one of the British MR2 forums, which caused me to do a little research on these. They seem to be relatively well made and use steel instead of aluminum for some parts, which should make them a bit stronger than their counterparts, such as D2 and Ksport. I found a thread on Nasioc, which has been covering the BC's for more than 2 years (didn't realize they had been around that long). Most buyers seemed to be relatively happy with them despite the high spring rates. Why all manufacturers seem to insist on these ridiculously high spring rates is beyond me. The only major concern, which is very typical of these units, is that after 6-12 months of driving a significant amount of owners report clunking from the units. The Subarus generally reported it from the rear units. Inspection of these units generally found significant wear of the upper spring mount bearing (I believe). Other issues were occasionally reported as well, but seemed to be the exception. Other than that they seem to be fairly well made and are still significantly lighter than the stock units. Their website lists prices for what looks like all replacement parts, and they can be rebuilt. It appears they originate from or through Japan, as all the original instructions were in Japanese. They also make inverted versions as well. You can supposedly order softer springs for them, but I haven't heard of the ranges available. I'd like to hear from others who may have bought these for their AW11's, to here how they have been holding up and working overall. |
