Parking Brake Cables

I have an '86 and had some trouble last winter with the parking brake freezing up, so I want to replace the cables this summer. I found someone who's parting out an '87 with fairly new park brake cables, but apparently they are configured differently. It seems the 85/86 has only one rear cable while the 87- has two. The front cables are the same, but the part number for the rear cable on mine doesn't match either of those used on the 87. Does anyone know what the difference is, and if the cables are interchangeable? I checked on the parts sites, but you can't really tell from the images if the ends even match. Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks,
Ray

i don't there is any difference. from the handle to the bottom of the car is one cable that then splits into two cables , i'm pretty sure they are all the same. 87 and up had slightly larger brakes but i don't think that the cables would be different.

Thanks. I haven't looked at mine yet to see how they're laid out ... does the 86 have two rear cables also? It seems they would (I've never heard of a parking brake on just one side) but I could only find a PN for a right rear cable (no left rear) for my car, and I checked several parts sites, including Toyota OEM. They all carried two rear cables for the 87-, too. (Strange.)

i have an 89 and the cables seem to be 1 cable from the handle and they go back to the rear wheel's. it looks like a "Y" and splits somewhere neat the center of the car. mine was covered by a plastic underbody cover. hope that helps you out even tho its a newer year
