new kid with a 3sge
hey guys, my name is Corey Kauffman from Athens, AL. I'm new to this forum and I am the proud owner of a '92 MR2 with a '94 3rd gen 3sge from a JDM celica and an E153 tranny/axles/hubs froma 95 turbo MR2. It is managed by a Halteck E6X standalone unit.....ummm pretty much stock stuff though. I've piddled around with it since i have bought it, but most of the work(swap and haltech) was done by the previous owner
I am a fan of DSMs and owned a '92 Eagle Talon TSi with a turbo swap before this. Toyotas are confusing the heck out of me, but I do like the foundations and basic components. Once I find some good parts suppliers and figure out EXACTLY what i have and know what to order, I plan on rebuilding the motor for a solid 200-250 hp N/A motor that i can daily drive. I can't stand this weird intake manifold and I my opinion, it can be greatly improved upon. I am also trying to look into swapping a BEAMS head onto my block, but I am not sure because of oil lines (VVTi works on oil pressure and I am thinking my block doesn't have that oil line) can anyone help me out in this field? thanks for taking time ta meet me! peace out Corey Kauffman |

What don't you like about the intake manifold? lol
The way it looks? Regardless, welcome aboard, and I hope you enjoy your 3SGE. (Although... nevermind... I won't say it, someone else will. It starts with a T) |

ahhh the butterfly setup garbage, its just like the H22 honduh stuff in my opinion. I'm brainstorming with my friend about manifold setups
(he builds custom turbo setups for a living) We bypassed it all in an H22 with his manifold and got 30hp extra...I'm gonna try to do the same I've done the big turbo thing with the talon, it was fun in a straight line with a slight delay, with this car, I do autocrossing and drifting and i want power on tap....I've tried to drift turbo cars and i can't hold it when the turbo spools up at the apex of the drift |

Might want to look for another platform if you plan to drift. But for autocross you're right on key. However, if you plan to be competitive, a swaped 3SGE won't be, well, might be, with a lot more money put in to it. In ES the 5SFE MK2 dominates, but once you've swaped you're in SM2, and normaly without a lot of money you get destroyed there. But if you plan to just race for fun then it'll be perfect.
If you've seen the Drift Bible then you know that even the Drift King Kenichi Tsuchiya has problems drifting an MR2. They're just not set up for it. There will be people that say it can be, but honestly, if you want to drift buy something FR. |

well....the previous owner has a 4th and 3rd place trophies from the atlanta region SCCA and he knew his S*** when it comes to suspension and brakes
and yes, there are two copies of the drift bible on top of my tv right now hahaha, maybe its his setup, but this car feels right to me. does anyone know about the BEAMS heads and what it takes to mount them to my block? |

![]() Keiichi Tsuchiya - not Kenichi first of all, second he spun out to prove a point, not because he lost control of the vehicle. The MR layout is completely fine when you: a.) Know what you're doing before you initiate the slide b.) Set the car up/tune the car properly c.) Use the correct mods like quicker spooling turbos vs. higher peak power/slower spooling turbos, coilovers that you can adjust a lot of camber/dampers are adjustable but stiff no matter what/have big spring rates, wider wheels with bigger offsets creating wider stance, streching the tires is not neccessary but helps so they fit the wheel wells but still give you more control over your car, pillowball tension rods that increase the steering angle as much as possible, etc, etc..... Perfect example of the MR layout in competion is the nsx. While the longer wheel base helps you control the car, it's still heavy. The MR2 is harder to control mainly because companies are not providing the proper drift specific parts that are necessary to help the control of the car. There are little tricks you can do to help it along like lightweight exhaust, carbon trunk, carbon engine lid, while leaving the spare tire and stock heavy ass hood up front but seat time in one car is your best bet. I personally drive an 89 RX7 Turbo 2 that is strickly for drifting, but I HAVE taken out the mr2 and played with it a little bit. I will say that after 40mph, the margin for error is a lot smaller than an FR chassis, but it will also improve your skills if you can recieve feedback from the car while you're driving it to figure out where to start changing stuff. You're biggest enemy is coilovers, LSD, and steering angle in the mr2 (or any car for that matter) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=082qDr-DfWI Last edited by Slidealliance; 05-20-2007 at 03:42 PM. |

As I said... others will argue otherwise, and symantics of how you spell his name aside, I doubt very much that he intended to spin out. Simply stated the MR2 is NOT the ideal drift platform, period. Can it do it? Sure... but can I play baseball? Yes I can, does that mean I'm major league material? No.
The MR2 is good at many things, drifting is not one of them. </inescapable logic> |

People say the same thing about the FC rx7, however you see more FC's drifting than any other car ASIDE FROM the 240's. |

If I could afford to crash my car I'd probably start trying to learn how to drift in it as well.
![]() But I can't. It's fun enough on wet roads, but I'm scared to loose traction any higher than 20 MPH. |

You could take your car to an open track day and learn at lower speeds then work your way up. If you manage to hit the wall at 20 mph.......well, you are simply too close to the wall! You can manage the sw20 NO PROBLEM around 20-30mph on a closed course. You should actually try it one day PETC ![]() |
