mr2 or 2nd gen rx7?

I am a rotorhead thru and thru and am fairly knowledgeable about how they operate...but my dream car when i was younger was always the mr2. I sold my first gen rx7 a few months ago and bought an suv..BIG MISTAKE! Now i need to be in a sportscar again and i am debating between being in an mr2(probably a mk1 to be as easy on the wallet as possible) or a second gen rx7(had a first gen, time for something new). I love the high rpm and the unique attribute of the 7 but i have always wanted a mr2(rear mouted engine FTW!)...is there anyone one with past experience with both cars? I realize everyone on here will be biased towards the mr2 but that's okay.....i just really wanted to hear what pros you guys/gals have to say about your rides compared to other imports...

IMO, id go for the RX7 against the MK1, if it were an MK2, MK2 FTW! but on the other hand, you can't beat the toyota reliability! i heard those old rotary engines are a pain!

I bought a '91 MR2 turbo the same time my best friend bought a '93 RX7. I can tell you that if you want reliability, go with the MR2. My friend's FD had maintenance issues up the wazoo- and they're weren't cheap either. Rotary engines are fun, but expensive. If you have the cash flow, go with the FD. If not, MKI is the best option for reliable and inexpensive fun!

2nd gen is the favorite one everybody likes right? If so the only reason I would say RX7 is for further down the line if you are looking at doing major MAJOR mods you have that V8 option which IMO would be crazy fun. But I think I saw the word budget in there some where so yeah MR2 FTW.

^ I think you're thinking of the 3rd gen RX-7, the 2nd gen is the one that resembles a more generic 944. The 2nd gen is very rare if you're looking for exclusivity, but the MK1 MR2 is way more reliable, even at 20 years old.

werd, thanks for the correction but that one isnt bad either. I do have to say thogh an old looking car that uns like an old cqar is not as fun as an old car that runs w/o problems and is fast as a new one.

I test drove a Gen2 RX-7 turbo (by myself, thanfully) pretty hard. I also own a 86 NA MR2 and I'd have to say the MR2 is not quite as powerful, but quite a bit more fun to drive anyway. Even with my blown struts (replacing soon), my MKI handles better. Now, that was only 1 experience with an RX-7, so I can't reliably give a blanket statement. However, the 7 felt pretty solid and didn't have any shudders, shakes, squeaks, banging, or any other indication that anything was wrong with it.

my 2 cent.
