EXACTLY!!!

Given the characteristics of the mr2... this non-experienced driver got sideways, panicked, hit the brakes (a big NO NO!!!)... the weight shifted to the front of the car and around she goes (well, almost LOL).

If he would've corrected his steering and feathered the throttle, this video would not be all over the world. But somebody, sooner or later, had to be used as an example hahaha.

Ok, so when in panik mode, what do you do? Like say I'm driving down a country road and a deer is in my way, if I can't slam on brakes when to do then? I understand why you don't slam on breaks, so with that being said, wouldn't you want the bigger brake discs in the back and the smaller weaker ones in the front to help prevent the car from getting out of control?

okay, i quit this thread... do what you like, it's your money, your choices... my final words are this:

with a great car comes great respect. respect it! if you so choose to get one, please don't drive like an ass clown and save your urges to go fast for tracks, circuits, and deserted highways/roads where it is safe to do so.

all the best,

"Learning how to drive" takes more than 6 months. If you are 15 going on 16 you are too immature and dumb, to own a turbocharged sportscar. No offense, everyone is immature and dumb at that age. Mark my word if you get an MR2 you will ruin it one way or another.

Corolla, Lumina, Civic, Taurus, whatever. You need a slow, POS grocery getter until you're at least out of high school.

Wow, I'm surprised at the amount of people loudly clamoring for you to have that Miata. As long as you stay within the speed limits, the MR2 drives like any other car on the road. If you are within the speed limit, you CAN brake in the middle of a turn... tight cloverleaf, etc... Toyota isn't going to sell a car that spins out at 40 mph on an offramp just cause you tapped the brakes.

I think the main reason most people want you to get the Miata is because of a few reasons:

1) Miatas are fast (enough), cheap as hell to mod enough for actual autocross even, and "sporty"

2) MR2's, either the supercharged MKI or Turbocharged MKII, are definately waaayyyy too much power for a first car

3) They don't want to see another MR2 wreck story or have one less to buy themselves.

If you're dead serious on getting an MR2, I'd reccomend the NA as well. Also, an MKI. Simply because there won't be as much temptation to show off, and if/when you wreck it they're cheaper than most MKIIs. Trust me, my first *just mine* car was an 84 Supra (before that I had a hand-me-down minivan... at least it drove!). Sporty, but not all show-offy.

Hey, do what you want... but the Miata will not only cost less to upgrade, but is widely recognized as one of the top learning to drive fast cars.

Look, we are not here to bash you or discourage ownership of an mr2. These cars are special, but they are just like a pet lion. You may have owned kittens before and assume a bigger cat is just a big kittie. You may even get away with teasing and rough housing him... till that one day he decides you overstepped your level of respect....then your dead. I know its a morbid metaphor, but don't take things lightly. Don't defend your "ability to drive anything etc" it doesn't matter. We are giving you the knowledge we have and the benefit of experiences of thousands of owners. A miata driven like a novice will get you a hospital bill and therapy...a MR2 driven like a novice will get you killed. You'd be destroying a car that is limited in number in the first place, but more so the tragic loss to your family and friends all because you wanted to be "cool" and have a powerful sports car to show off. We would be happy to accept you as a MR2 owner..even proud!!!, but we'd feel even worse if you were lost due to no one telling you the honest truth. Don't get a 2 as your first car, we'll still be here in a couple years. I'll even show you how to put a V6 Turbo in .

Dave

P.S. the N/A MR2 isn't as slow as these guys say. The N/A is proven faster in autocross FYI.

Buy an NA and do a swap once you've driven it for 2 or 3 years. That's what I did. If you plan to upgrade the car its so much cheaper to go NA and then put in a fresh swap. You'll spend more money buying a turbo and doing the maintenance required to bring it up to level at which you can bolt on mods with no worries.

1. buy an na
2. do suspension, brake, body, whatever you want
3. later on down the road get a gen2 or gen3 swap

7 years later I can say it was worth it going NA first. Be careful..you'll dump some money in an MR2 before you know it.

The NA motor is a very fun thing to drive...you'd be amazed at the torque it creates on low end....plus its bullet proof (if you change your oil of course)

Thanks Dave, that was well put, I'm still not wanting to give up on the idea of a MR2 sitting on our driveway. The NA version seems like the ticket, and I might even look into getting the mk1, I like the looks of it too. A v6 in that little car would be insane! That would be fun to put in, but that wouldn't be for a while for me, until I could run across a wrecked car with a v6 in it.

Jaicvc, I don't think a stock mr2 would be to much, especially if I want a mk1.

Raven brought up a point to me, why did they stop making the mr2? But yeah I really don't want to wreck one, Heck I don't want to wreck anything. But anyway I do like the Miata, heck it might even come down to me getting one, but I just like the fact that the mr2 is mid engine and will perform better because of it.

YES! I love lowend torque, I think the v6 in the lumina has a lot of high end torque.

The MR2 was stopped from importation in 1995 due to low sales volume and its a niche car that kinda ran out of steam with the new TT Supra being the "Flagship" of Toyota's weekend car lineup. It was made till 1998 in japan and parts are fairly easy to come by, but be prepared, this is not an easy or cheap car to work on. Mid-engine equals pain the ass to do any work on, even if you know your way around an engine bay. Most mechanics can't locate the engine on the first or second try.

High ticket price and a small portion of the market leads to sales that usually don't cover R&D and production expenses. The market wasn't ready for the MR2. Toyota would have done so much better if the MK3 would have been another turbo engine variation with OEM add on parts like Subaru, Nissan, and others are doing. Today's car enthusiast is willing to pay top dollar for a 'tuned' stock car. If I could buy a 2007 MR2 with brembos, recaro seats, trd exhaust...etc...I'd pay a high price. Toyota is one of the largest corporations in the world and their resistance to compete in the current sports car market shows their underlying business strategy....low cost & high quality = maximum profit. Catering to the largest segment of the market (economy cars) has taken Toyota a long way. The Supra, MR2, and others will never fall into that category. Only thing to hope for is the Lexus lineup. But in todays world of luxury sports coupe the manual transmission nonexistent.

Hey I got a 91 n/a for my first car when I was 14, almost 15 for $250 but like everyone else said you have to have respect for the car. Mine didn't run when I got it and I wasn't about to pay a mechanic to fix it. After putting tons of time getting it running I had enough respect to not do anything stupid in it. Then after 1 spin out, luckily with not damage, I got to where I had the car pretty well figured out. After the old motor finally threw a rod I got a Gen3 turbo and put it in there. I havn't spun it since that first time but trust me it will get out of control sometime on you somewhere. Everyone I know with an MR2 MKII has spun at least once, weather they admit it or not. The only thing for advise I can give you is just try and think before you try something crazy to show off or whatever cause it gets real bad real fast.
