Every 3,000 miles unless I'm running a lot of track events. Then usually every other event.

Yeah, I typed that bad.
All those issues are MR2 specific. The ones in the list below it about boost pressure and crap, are what I meant for turbo specific stuff. |

I've only owned the car for 1000 miles, more or less, and I did a tune up and oil change as soon as I bought it. I drive mixed, about 1/3 freeway and 2/3 city and get about 20 miles per a gallon. So what is this ChevronTechron Fuel system? I really want to get the most mileage I can, so are there any mods/techniques/etc that any of you have done to increase mileage/efficiency?
By the way... what gas are you guys using? |

for your needs... the non-turbo is more than enough. i know, i've owned both. plus, the non-turbo has many upsides. slightly cheaper insurance, virtually maintenance free, and better gas mileage. I went from a 93T to a 91NA. I will say though, I do miss the power A LOT!

Turbos run 91 octane at least, but it wont do jack **** on your NA. Run cheap gas and keep your foot out of it. The way to get the best mileage is to drive like grandpa, if you aren't doing that already... then that is your problem. |

Chevron Products - Techron Concentrate Plus 20mpg is kinda low even for mixed driving. When you did your tune up what did you replace? butter nuts is right about driving making a big difference in your efficiency but you'd have to be on it pretty hard all the time to get that kind of milage. That's not much better than what I get on mid-sized race tracks. |

If you're doing that ratio of driving, and getting on it everywhere, you could be getting low-20's easily. with 3/4 freeway I have seen 32mpg in my car, usually average is ~30 w/ 50-50, I however don't get on it much (ask Luni, he makes fun of me for drivin like an old man, lol).
Also on the freeway, try to keep it 70 and below. That really helps a ton in our cars since they are revved so high. Other than that I'd replace fuel filter, air filter, new oil, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, get your injectors cleaned. Perhaps a decarb for the intake manifold? I'd start there, specially if you have no idea when it was done last. |

Believe it or not, I used to get 32 - 35 mpg going 80 over long hauls.

I dont know how I got it, but I went over 400 miles on a tank of gas in my turbo, and I averaged 36 that trip. I was following my dad the whole time. We were in wyoming driving from Rock Springs up into Yellowstone, and I was behind him the whole time, but not really following close enough for it to be considered "drafting" him.
But Ive averaged 30 a few times, 28, 29, 25, etc I think just having everything tip top, no boost leaks, no knocking and detonation, just a good running engine, helps, if youre on the stock ECU. You can tune a standalone for insane mileage. |
