New to MR2 forums

Hello everyone my name is Derrek.

Im almost at the age of 17. I enjoy automobiles very much, and i plan on having autotech skills some day. I simply know the basics of a MR2. I plan on getting a MR2 soon, a 93 N/A Sunroof * 1993 Toyota MR2, 113k miles, sunroof ! * . I have read the stickies on buying a mr2 and etc. So im fully aware of what im getting in too. For now i dont plan on pushing the car to the limits (just use it to get around town), but possibly in the future i want to build and race my mr2.

For now i have a couple of questions. some would be, are mr2's known to start breaking down? and if so will i be planning to spend much of my money fixing things (like major parts that are costly)

First off welcome. As for the question about starting to break down it is a 15 year old car and something is bound to happen, it's expected, but they aren't really that bad at mechanical failure. To me the car looks very clean and well taken care of so I wouldn't look forward to anything major hapening, but keep in mind is is a used 15 year old car. Other than that good luck and have fun.

Thanks for the welcoming everyone.

Unfortunatly the MR2 i just looked at wasnt in as good as condition i thought it was. I looked for leaks and etc and found none. however when i started the engine, lots of thick white smoke came out. my uncle who is a mechanic said there was alot of wear on the engine and advised me not to buy it. So now im going to keep my head up and try looking for another mr2. such a disapointment in the seller.

I think all 5s engines do that. Has something to do with the valve seals sucking. Mine still smokes a bit but not enough to cause me any alarm.

At first i thought it coulda been that the car was garaged for a while. but then the smoke just kept coming out (around 20sec worth of smoke). I asked the dealer if it ever passed smoged, and he replied he has never done a smog check. So I just told the dealer thanks and left.
