Ok so maybe the Mr2 is not made for drifting haha, but hey if it gets me to work faster than i'm all for it.

The scion does not "flip" because it understeers before it would ever flip....and maybe "you" can't drive as well as you portray you drive if you think it will flip..I mean it'll flip if you yank the steering wheel real quick, but that would mean your off line which means you don't know how to drive LOL..no offense but you have not driven these roads so you have no idea how a car would handle on them. they go up as they turn so if anything the tires grip more and the car is pushed down. You mostly go down before you turn "up" so you can get all the speed you need, not want.

I am going to keep the scion, but i want a more fun car as well.

I know i've only been driving 4 -5 years but hey everyone has a different learning curve

I have never read Initial D, I have only heard of it, so any reference to the magna is impossible for me to have done.

I would gladly meet up with anyone here once I get the Mr2 to re-learn how to drive MR setups again. I would also be glad to show people this road because i think I am like the only one that knows about it LOL. The population is 1,000 in the town where my college is at and its 50 miles from anything...

And btw, I dont drive to college fast because its usually night time.....I drive to work fast though

. There are many deer at night, and big "take over the road" trucks taking these no lane turns...

There is also a good reminder of what your car looks like if you fall off a cliff halfway through the "course".

Yeah, I don't drive those roads you're right, I said the way you describe driving through those roads I doubt the car would hold. So are we exaggerating? or are you exaggerating your driving skills?

Having only skimmed thru this thread heres my advice...

I don't care, nor am I insulting your driving skills.... But mr2s suck for drifting just ask the PO of my car (im 100% certain this kid couldnt drive but still it works for my point) he fubared the drivers door, drivers side rear quarter and blew the engine. That was all from drifting in the mr2 (revved the engine too high past 9k and blew the engine and slide into a pole in a parking lot). he also said it was empty no one around.

As for getting this car Mk1's are great cars spend your money getting it in good running shape before painting, etc. last thing you want is to ding/dent/stratch your new paint with parts and tools. plus its free and a few peeps already said if you got it and didnt want it they would give you $100 for it. thats $100 profit!

Oh and guys I watch initial d lol its a cool anime and some slight truth in the theories explained on the show but yeah dont use it as a learn to drive guide :P

Also everyone on here is correct please for the love of all car gods lol do not drift this car fix it restore it.....they will be classics in about 10 more years or so.....plus mr2 means devil when pronounced in french :P Whats better then that.

thanks for the post man. I will most likely keep it in the barn till I have the correct funds. Once I have the funds I plan on either getting a new engine or hoping that this one will start etc..

I will take your word for the drift thing, if only we could make these things 4wd!

After going over this thread, I'd have to agree with what most everyone else has said. MKI MR2s are NOT drifting cars. I've owned mine since Feb. of 2008, and I've put plenty of miles on it since I first purchased it. I have not had the luxury of taking it on a track yet, however, there are quite a few canyons close by I've run repeatedly. In all honesty I've never even broke the tires loose on dry pavement.

It is very possible to "drift" for short periods of time, but not plausible in an MR2. With a wheel base of 91.3'' (7.6'), a mid-engine lay out, and weighing next to nothing, these things handle amazingly. Good handling makes for horrible drifting.

Search some of the posts from the user "curvesrgood." He owns two MKIs, an NA and a SC, from what I've read he loves the **** out of both. Judging from most of his posts (which can usually get long

), he has a lot of experience with them and would be an excellent source of information.

By no means am I degrading your driving abilities - I'm just trying to help point you in the right direction. I am sure if you were to drive an MKI, you'd understand what the people around here are trying to explain to you. Nothing teaches better than first hand experience.

To sum it all up:
If you want a car for drifting and drifting only, get a 240 or an older Corolla (Initial D) and spare that MR2. If you want a car that will hold its ground, get the MR2.

going back to the drifting to go faster thing... I'm sorry, but it just doesnt work like that. the physics is just not possible... when it comes down to it, you can only go so fast in a turn until your tires start to lose grip. as soon as they do you will slow down. its all about the friction between the road surface and your tires. once the tires break loose, you are working with a kinetic coefficient of friction. the kinetic coefficient is always lower than the static coefficient (when the tires are gripping). Thats just how physics is. With that said.. its impossible to pull more g's in a turn with a lower coefficient of friction. sorry for all the technical stuff, im an engineering student I cant help it haha. I raced quarter midgets for 7 years when I was younger on a dirt oval... the track was always the fastest when it got tacky (sticky dirt) and the cars were not sliding. Thats when we pulled the most g forces and carried the most speed in the turns (my neck would actually get sore from holding my head up on those nights). Thats when the fastest lap times were put in also. The only time I see drifting as being beneficial is when you come to a very sharp turn where you have to slow down a lot and then turn the car. The drift is just used to turn the car and slow it down at the same time, which doesnt make you go faster, but cuts down on braking time, which can make your lap time a little quicker.

also in most cars if you are sliding the speedo says your going faster only because they read speed from the drive wheels

Edit: one other thing, if anyone brings up the whole rally drifting thing if you watch most of the really sideways crazy slides happen in places where the car makes a complete 180, where the driving surface is slippery (aka loose dirt, wet tarmac, gravel, etc), or theyre a super torquey awd impreza/focus driven by a scotsman.

Seriously though, if that thing has been sitting that long, there is a long list of things that will need to be replaced. I'm running into that right now. I just bought one that's been sitting for only 2 years and there are many things that are getting replaced. Of course I have the budget and the time to do it right now. If I was still in college (oh how the years have flown by.....) I would have waited on this if I had a place to keep it that wouldn't cost me anything. Start collecting things gradually for it and then start working on it. In a few years it will be up and running and you'll have something you can enjoy (but not for the same reasons you are stating now).
