Talking Newbie

Hey all! TJ from Champaign Illinois here. Bought my N/A 1992 MR2 in june of 07 it only had 81,xxx miles on it. I am the 3rd owner of the car. The previous owner installed a car alarm with remote locks, put on 15 inch konig rims (with stupid VISA tires that I cant find anywhere!) and a tiny (i think 10 inch) sparco racing steering wheel. I am totally happy with the car as of now. There is so much I want to do to it though and I am a poor student with very little income. Plus Im like almost 30 so I really need to start thinking about saving for retirement. So far the only thing that i have done to the car was (after some c-rag backed into my front right fender and bumper and f-ed it all up) fix the bumper and fender and her ins paid for all that plus the body guy was really nice and re-painted the hood which was really faded. Then he gave me some excellent advice on the rest of the faded paint (since there is little to no clear coat on those parts of the car). He showed me a product by 3M called Perfect-it III extra cut rubbing compound. Its an abrasive compound that took all the faded layers of paint off and now my paint looks great, this bottle is almost $50 but its worth it. The product number for anyone who needs something like this is N051131-05936. I however, suggest that if anyone does have the same problem I did with the paint is to find somone who will spray a couple layers of clear for you after you rub down your entire car. Ive rubbed mine down twice and put about 15 layers of wax and it still fades back a little (I myself am in the process of contacting a guy who does body work as a hobby and would only charge me the materials for the clear so that I eventually dont rub through to the primer). I want to eventually put on flush mount headlights, lower the car a bit and maybe put on a front lip, side skirts and new rear bumper. My speakers in the doors are blown, theres no A/C (i think the compressor is out). By the end of this summer Ill need to install a new clutch, I would also like to put in new seats, speakers (maybe a speaker box that goes behind the seats with a couple of subs in it. Might have to fab one that'll fit just right) the only other thing I want to do is to tint the windows. Well to date thats my MR2 and me in a nutshell.

Welcome aboard TJ! Thanks for the info on that rubbing compound. My red is fading pretty bad on the back half of my 2. I just might have to give that stuff a try.

Congrats. I'll have to look into that rubbing compound as well. If you are looking for speakers and a custom enclosure for subs, baktasht at emspowered.com has some. He's also a board sponsor. The sale is over, but I'm sure if you contact him, he'll work something out for you: SALE: Subwoofer + Custom Enclosure Combo

You'll find almost everything you need/want for your mr2 here. The board sponsors are great. Congrats on your 2.
