New member

Greetings Fellow MR2 Owners;

I am new to this forum and I am stoked by all the info I have already received from many of the members just buy reading some your messages back and forth. I currently own two MK1 MR2s. My main driver is an '88 with; Ttops, original red paint, original gray/black cloth/vinyl interior, and a "knocking" motor with 192K on it. I bought the car in Oct. of '07 and the only thing I had to do to it was to put tires, wipers, cltch mster cyl, and exhaust sys. Paint is very good with no dings and the interior is almost perfect. Amazing.

Current plan is to use the 120K motor out of my '87 parts car, change what needs to be changed and keep on motoring. However, like all of you, I am looking at mods to do while everything is apart. My sons want me to put a Silver Top or Black Top in it but I really want to do what would be best. I liked what I read from MR220v. (Please correct me if I am wrong.) He said that all the 16v motor needs is more displacement and better fuel delivery (my paraphrase). I think what he was saying was to; rebuild the 16v with larger aftermarket pistons, put on a better flywheel, upgrade the cams, and install the head from a 20v. Is that even close? Would love to hear the group's input on this.

Thanks for such a great forum to talk about these tremendous cars.

MR2Greg, I'm not going to comment on what MR220v said, as I'm not sure on the specifics of combining a 20v and a 16v - hopefully he'll come in and clarify it.

As far as engine options go, there's a lot to choose from. The cheapest and easiest would most likely be to simply fix & keep your 16v.
The next step up is, and always has been up in the air. Some people prefer the 4AGZE (Supercharged) as to where others prefer the 20v (most prefer the blacktop over the silvertop from what I've seen). Both, from what I've read up, seem to be pretty simple to do, with the 4AGZE being a little bit more on the easy side. Performance is where people get split on the engines.
Then you have the option of doing some fab works and putting in the 3SGTE from the MKIIs (a.k.a. MK 1.5). This is a pretty expensive job, but anyone I've seen that has done it, loves the **** out of it.
There are also a few people who have done various other swaps, like V6s and V8s, etc.

Anyway that's a quick run down of some engine options, none of which is from my personal experience, as I own an '87 NA. Welcome to the boards.

You can get any 4age to 1.8L with a 7afe bottom end and slightly larger pistons. There's a pretty nice set of belfab rods for the 7afe that look like they'll hold up a bit better.

Sorry I didn't respond to your post sooner.

Thanks for the tip on the 7age bottom end and the piston info. Didn't respond very quickly because I am still trying to figure all this out. First time to do everything, I guess. Anyway, thanks again and I'll let you know how it all turns out.

If MR220V is still online; Is there a ballpark for hp increase on bumping to 1.8, pistons, etc?
