Old Newby - 1986 Base
This morning I bought an '86 w/ 41,470 miles. From the pictures it seems in good shape. I hope so 'cause I paid almost $6,200 including sales tax etc. I'm sure that's way too much. When the salesman called back to tell me how the dealership wanted to handle the transaction he said 2 other people had called to inquire about the car. If I hadn't bought it it seems like someone else would've snapped it up.
The biggest problem is that it's 450 miles away and I can't get it for about 2 weeks. I'm 44yo and graduated college in '86. I've always liked the MK1 best and have looked but never found one that caused me to pull the trigger until now. I'm eating a lot of crow right now from my family...about 7 years ago I had a very negative experience with my local Toyota dealer (problems went all the way to Toyota corporate). I swore I would never buy another Toyota. Everytime I go by the dealership I give 'em the #1 in sign language. I've never really liked Kyle Busch and now that he's having such sucess in a Toyota I really can't stand him. Sounds like I need a lot of therapy to sort this all out...Maybe the new-to-me MR2 will be just the ticket? I'm struggling to decide if the '07 Chevy Colorado loses it's garage spot to the MR2. Please don't tell me how bad I got ripped off in the purchase. I really don't want to know. I did make a wimpish attempt to talk them down on the price but got no concessions. |

Welcome... And how the **** do you not like Kyle Busch!?!? He's freaking awesome! Kind of off topic now but did you watch the Coke Zero 400 saturday night. He was leading so long. I actually got to go to the race.![]() As far as the MR2 goes, you'll find a lot of great info here. And I think the MR2 should take the garage. ![]() |

Welcome! 6K for 41,xxx miles sounds OK, but I just paid $400 for a "pristine"
127K-mile "jewel" mods are rust and body damage, but it gets ~35 MPG HWY!Funny, someone with your SN giving that dealer the #1 sign ![]() |

Yup, looks as clean as I thought it might... no matter what anyone says about price, mk1's that clean are getting VERY hard to come by, so enjoy that one!
It looks great from the pictures!! I was thrilled to get one was right at 100K on the ticker... I may have even overpaid (according to some folks), but I couldn't be happier and would gladly buy it again. Mine had really faded paint and had two panels replaced from a minor fender bender too, but everything was in good order aside from the paint fade. Congrats on finding such a clean one!! And folks think my 88 N/A is clean... doesn't have anything on that one! Wow! |

Looks like it's in fantastic shape, but I'd never spend more than $3,000 on an mki, and only that much if it was immaculate, and supercharged or with a completed engine swap.
Have fun. ![]() |

I would have bought it. I paid 1700 for my 88 with 104K on it. Will post pics eventually. There was a guy here in Tampa that was a selling an 89 with 64K on it, but the car had been parked in the open for 3 years with the T-tops off and had lots of rust, dents and bruises...He wanted 800, talked him down to 5 after seeing the car, but he never returned any of my calls after that.
