hello poeple. im new

hi..
names matt.

im now persuing my interests in a different kind of car..

from larger rwd commodores and such (wich were fun for a few years until i realised theres more to driving than finding a dead straight road and seeing what top speed i could reach or how much smoke i could create from my tyres.

im looking for a mk1 mr2 to build a little track car for some fun.

i hoe to have one within 2 or 3 weeks providing i find a desent candidate.

it will be good to discuss m progress with ou guys who are experianced and up to dat with the old mr2

Where are you located? 5500 sounds like a lot for an 89, I just got an 87 for $400.00
and it needs lots of work, but runs great! Spending less for the base car and more on
mods is usually the way to go if racing is the goal. Provided you can do lots of work DIY.

Welcome!

Best advice I can give: drive more than one AW11 before deciding. Good luck with the search!

Welcome! I'd agree, the price for an 89 seems a bit high unless it is super clean, very low miles or if it is nicely modded already somewhat (or a nice clean Supercharged car maybe... not a whole lot of 89 S/C's around). I dropped 4K on a nice, modded S/C swap car (sunroof N/A chassis) and a large parts stash and that car is in AMAZING order... suspension done, was running 12.5 lbs boost when I got it, interior was sorted and looked almost new... just was great. I've done very little to the car and it has been nothing but a pleasure to drive!! I came from the front engine rwd deal too... 3 Mustangs (92, 95, 65) and 3 Corvettes (78, 92, 96 GS LPE car) and so I learned the same lesson you did. Found out the curves were where the fun was anyway . Best of luck with your search for the right Deuce for you!

On a side note, I picked up a rolling shell (with a good many parts on it still aside from motor, tranny and about 2/3 of an interior) that was a former racer (has bolt holes from a bolt-in roll bar and no carpet) for free, so you can find some deals. I doubt you want to start with THAT much of a project though, but heck, there was one locally already ready to race for $2,500! It was an 86 with only 86K miles on it too, was sweet, but I didn't have the cash at the time so I missed out on it.

commodore is an Australian/NZ brand but I think derived from an american car?
(maybe GM, so if is, it must be a Holden)

hey guys..

thanks for the input..

lol.. yep holden it is my friend.. iv still have the vs wich was factory v6 until i did my own v8 conversion.. but sadly the gear box blew and the dif isnt to healthy.. it sits in a shed on my uncles farm now..

but as for the mr2's thats about the price they go for on an average that iv found so far.

i dont mind a bit of a project.. thats half the fun.. some thing to sink beers around in the shed.. instead of my tx3.. which has to go.. i dontlike this front wheel drive business.

Welcome to the farm..

With big names like "Commodore" are we to guess your not in/from America?

Guess what? Your finished ready to race Mark 1 is in my driveway?

Yep, a fully race prepared, for sanctioned SCCA Time Trials Racing (fast like in Sebring/Daytona)

Yet, calm enuff for a go to work car too. (fully trimmed interior)

Supercharged Roadster 30mpg..

Mikey likes it..

i also like...

yes i have never been to the us.. always been in aus.

theres a (appeared to be ) nice little mk 1 for sale in a dealership for 4500.. but apon inspection i found rust build up around the oil filter... along with all sorts of leaks and it didnt even have an air filter.. so i pretty much told the guy to go play in traffic with his constant pressure on me to make an offer. theres also another thats semi track prepped such as the add quotes "suspension, steering, semi slick tyres, and modified sway bars front and rear" that i am going to look at and if i can talk to they guy who is selling it instead of his wife il find out what price he is asking. but id prefer to buy as standerd and do all the work my self and learn from it..

what are the rough build costs to get6 these cars prepped for track?

Great to see another auzzie, welcome buddy and great to hear that you've finally decided to broaden your mind away from the one dimentional mind of a commodore & falcon owner lol

There are alot of cheap AW11 around melbourne for under $5000, jump on carsales or autotrader and you'll be find something ideal in no time.
