Hi! New to the MR2 scene

Why I like it : 1) T-tops
2) It's a Toyota!
3) Not too expensive for a RWD
4) Did I mention T-tops?
5) Lots more....

Why I'm holding back.. Now I was hoping you guys could clear some info up for me here!
1) Mid engine - Is it hard to work on the engine? The only reason I'm holding off on the MR2 and reconsidering the 240SX is because I have no idea if I can work on the midengine or not! Is it just as easy as the front engine platforms or is there a certain degree of difficulty? Please tell me?!

Well, actually the Mid-engine is really the only thing that's holding me back. Also, I might go to some local drift events around where I am, and I know the MR2 can oversteer because of the engine placement. Any personal experience with this? Directed toward the "drifting group" here.

Check this out please?

Also, I just came across this : http://images.importtuner.com/featur...front_view.jpg

It was in Importtuner, and I was wondering if the 3000GT headlight conversion was very common like the S15 conversion in the 240SX world because I am very interested and I personally like how the 3000GT headlights look in the MR2. ( Please don't flame me for being rice/that's just my style )

Thanks for listening to the rant!

welp, first let me say welcome to the boards! you'll find that people wont flame you near as much here as they would on other forums. the MR2 community is pretty tight nit and we tend to look out for our own. so dont hesitate to ask questions

dont be scared of the mid-engine platform. i personally have found it easier to work on my deuce than most other ff or fr drivetrains. the only downside i can see, doing clutch/tranny swaps. that's a little more difficult if you dont have a lift. but keep in mind, there is a plethora of knowledge on these boards and a multitude of people who will help you in any way they can, myself included

good luck!

Wow, thanks for the warm welcome!

I actually do have access to a lift, at my highschool autotech class. Well, it's good to hear that the Mid-engine platform isn't too hard to work on.

Any info about the 3000GT headlight conversion?

Also good to hear that the MR2 community is tight. I expected a flame ball to come shooting out of my monitor when someone read that I like the 3000GT headlight conversion.

Well thanks again and please provide me with the knowledge of the MR2's!

to be honest, that's the first time i've ever heard of that headlight conversion. i personally dig the pegasus HID's and there's no custom work involved with those!!

Not sure about the charged/turbo engines but I find my na 88 very easy to work on. I can even change my oil without the use of jacks lol :P

Without jacks? How do you get to your oil filter? Remote? Oh, sorry phatjo911. Got distracted. Welcome to the board. If you have access to a lift it is ALL good. Working on MR2s is an aquired taste. It can be a bit intimidating until you just do it. Highly recommend downloading a BGB (Toyota Service Manual) for help in some of the best ways to access certain parts/components. Sometimes it takes some creative thinking and patience to get the job done but the end result is always rewarding. Good luck.

I just lay on the ground and reach up and unscrew the thing. Although you can get relocation kits as well, been thinking about that just to make it even easier. :P

This is prolly the only headlight conversion I have seen that I really liked so far.

Wow... looks a lil' intimidating to do, kind of like a Veilside Fortune kit.

And if anyone knows, how much modification to the hood/fender/bumper is required for the RX-7 headlight conversion? The two shapes look kind of similar so I'm guessing it's not a complete hack-job project.

first and foremost, welcome to the board.

let me first say that it is more difficult to work on the midengine layout. engine parts are a lot harder to reach at and you don't have much room in a lot of spots (especially compared to a 240sx engine bay). be ready for a sore back from learning over the c-pillar all the time. But let me tell you this, once you've done fixing a mid-rear, every thing else out there is pretty easy peasy to work on.

the mr2 is SO much more fun to drive than the 240sx. don't be too worked up about the over-steering. it's all in how you drive it and knowing the car and its limits. i will say that the mr2 community does lack an abundant source of readily available aftermarket parts, that's where the 240 community shines. 240's have parts everywhere because of the drift movement. imo, it would be lower costing to get a 240 quicker, but i like the mr2 for its exclusivity and handling characteristics.

a winter beater should be a must (or second car if you live where there's no snow) and you'll have to live with only 2 seats and a small trunk. other than that, i love the mr2. i've owned two of them and had to have one since i was 12 years-old.

all the best in your decision.

Thanks for the welcome. I've heard stories of MR2's not running after they've had rain... How does that work exactly? I'm actually pretty much set on the MR2 now. The main thing that drew me in was that it has a T-top. I do have a 2007 Toyota Yaris ( My dad's ) Which he will let me drive if I need it.

Are there any common rust problems with the MR2?

For the 240SX, there's rust on just about 90% of the car. Is the MR2 this bad?
( I'm in the Boston area. )
