Howdy!
New to the MR2 and the board. Howdy. Just bought my first and second MR2 on Saturday.
To make a long story short, a woman on the other side of town had her daughter post her MR2 on craigslist. I went down and met with her and saw the car on Saturday around noon: a blue 1989 MR2, non-supercharged, with a manual transmission. Sortof but not really running. She works about 40 miles from home and when driving home one day after getting her oil changed, saw blue smoke coming from the exhaust. Parked the car in August; her mechanic told her a new motor would be $3k. So the car's been sitting on the curb for a couple months. The car is in pretty good shape. A little primer on the right front fender from a sideswipe that had been repaired but not painted in yet. Some other bumps and bruises, nothing not expected. And frankly, I don't care about most of them because this is going to be my race car project. Yes, the wife was thrilled when I called her and told her I'd bought it. ![]() But the kicker is that the car was on a buy one, get one free sale! Turns out that the seller had bought a red '85 MR2 about three years ago. It hasn't run the whole time and she thinks it has a seized engine. It was sitting in the back yard and she said, well, if you're going to buy that one, then you might as well take the red one too. So now I have two not-currently-running MR2's sitting in the driveway, which my wife is saying makes us look slightly WT. I don't care, I'm going to build a race car, baby! Still not sure where I'll race it, although it sounds like NASA might be able to fit this in nicely.I've done a fair bit of work on my cars over the last 15 years or so, but nothing approaching what I think is going to be required on my new MR2. So I'll probably be bugging you with tons of questions here soon. Thanks in advance. Cheers. |

Welcome to the Board! Sounds like you got a hell of a deal! Congrats. This site has a whole lot of info and resources to get you up and running. Aaron Willis at Lithia Toyota is a Board Sponsor and has an AW11 as well. If you need/want new OEM parts, he'll get you set up (awillis@lithia.com). What are your plans (new motor, suspension, etc.) and when can we see some pics?
