Selling my blown engine STi and getting an MR2 or...
In the next 6 months I am either:
1) Selling my STi and getting a nice early 90s turbo MR2 in the 350-450 whp (probably widebody) range on a ~$12k budget CT: 2004 STi rolling chassis (possible blown engine) w/ lots of mods for sale CHEAP - NASIOC 2) Selling my STi and getting another modified car to include the following or other suggestions: LS1 Camaro/Trans Am, LS1 swapped vehicle (rx7, s14, etc), Turbo 240sx, built 500hp+ civic hatch/CRX 3) Keep my STi and put some money to build it to 400-450 whp daily driver, I would also get tints, and flat black paint job I think the MR2 and the FD rx7 look the nicest out of all the vehicles I'm looking at. The STi is definitely no slouch, but I have only driven AWD and FF cars and would really like to experiment with rear wheel drive for a change. The MR layout and exotic look of the MR2 is also a key factor. I wonder how hard it is to learn to drive at the limits. Reliability and cost/ease of maintenance is also a huge concern of mine. Toyota is known to be reliable but I know very little about the MR2 admittedly. I would like to own a car that I requires little work on my part unlike the DSMs I used to own. I can't believe some of the deals I am seeing lately for all cars. Last edited by ultrabaka; 12-18-2008 at 11:10 PM. |

Well if you get a 93+ MR2 with ABS and the 93+ Turbo brakes, the car is capable of 60-0 in 107ft according to Motor Trends best bang for the buck issue August 1994. Compare that to a 1999 Ferrari 360 Modena which does 60-0 in 110ft.
A stock 93+ MR2 also garners .94g on the skidpad, the same results as a Ferrari F40. And if you get a MR2 with a stock 3rd gen 3sgte swapped into them, they are capable of the quartermile in 13.3 seconds. If you want a good all around track car/atuox/ drag car, the MR2 is a great choice, especially with a 3rd gen swapped in (although the 2nd gen is no slouch if u slap a methanol kit and t3/t4 turbo kit onto it and turn the boost up to 25psi, just less safe is all) There old cars, a lot of them require maintenance more so than a new STi has. But I think its better than paying monthly car payments, whenever a part goes bad on my MR2, I upgrade and look forward to having it faster than it was b4. built civic? flat black paint job?
those are both bad ideas anyways...whats your plans for the car your getting? are you going to race the car or put it on the track/drag? or do you just want a fast daily driver? if you plan on getting an MR2 get a low mileage one and make sure it hasn't been beatin on and you really shouldn't have to replace parts on it just regular maintaince |

I'm with MR2 Drifter a flat black car is bad and a civic is worse. No matter what people say flat black is not cool. And no matter what ricers say civics are not cool. And assuming you keep the civic FWD 500hp is pointless they can put about 250-300 on the ground and after that it is wasted on wheelspin.
240sx, MR2, FDrx7 or s14 are all far better cars. All have different traits and good and bad. MR2 is bad if you haul people about cause of only being a 2 seater. RX7 if it is a rotary requires HUGE maintenance cause the rotor tips wear especially since it is hard to take it easy all the time defeating the point of having an rx7. High horsepower Nissans get stolen and can be money holes sometimes. Subarus blow gearboxes and throw pistons I have had personal experience with that and it will do it even if you put money into it they are just overated engines imo, the evo is much better. Just my $0.02 |

you know a week or so ago I saw an episode of pinks where they had a 600+ HP civic vs a '96 (or so) Ram Air firebird with a 600+HP engine. the race that the Honda won it started half way down the track while the firebird started at the line. every other race the firebird spanked the Civic. Maybe you should stay away from them for drifting or drag racing. Not sure how they do on a road course but what do I know?
