New here.

Good morning!

I just joined here hoping to learn more about the mk1 mr2's than I've picked up reading various articles, and I figure a few questions right off the bat might set me in line.

First off, I noticed that the chat was empty. I'm up in Maine (gmt-5), so it's only 10am here. Does the chat ever pick up? Is there an IRC version, or does that connect to an IRC backend? I spend a-lot of time on IRC servers, and a place where I could talk to car entusiasts there would greatly improve my ability to learn.

I don't currently own an mr2. I've never even owned a car that wasn't a GM, and my current car has been absolutely great to me: However, I've fallen in love with the mk1 mr2 for it's size. (I have a thing for small cars)
In a few months, probably in the spring, I plan to purchase a 1986 mr2.
If there is a place in this board to sell/trade, I'll be found there looking- it has to be an 86, and it has to be in good enough condition to drive it to Maine; and possibly florida first to visit a dear friend, depending on location. I'm looking for rust-free, so I can try and keep it that way up here in maine (and if you've ever been here, you know that's not easy)

A little about myself, I guess. I'm currently 22, looking to buy a house. I'm a computer tech, and you can pretty much find me near or on a computer (even have a touchscreen in my current car). I've never made a car payment, and never plan to. I guess that's all I need to say for now.
Here's hoping that there is an IRC chat, or possibly that the current chat is linked to an irc backend, otherwise I'll probably never go.

Lol, I didn't know this site had a chat function... guess you learn something every day! Glad you're here, enjoy the site... lots of information here, the search function works good too if you have specific questions. After all, many specific questions have been asked before, so that's a good resource. I have 3 mk1's myself (two 88's and an 86 hardtop ex-race car project that I've started turning back into a street car). I've had a few GM's myself... actually 3 Corvettes (one supercharged Lingenfelter GrandSport) and a an old Camaro, and I haven't found anything that's all-around as fun as the mk1 MR2. I love them! If you're set on an 86, make sure the one you get doesn't have the somewhat common 5th gear pop-out where the 5 speed doesn't want to stay in 5th gear while driving down the road (not cool I hear). HERE is a link to my album of pictures, my 86 project is there as well as my 88's if you get the urge to stare at some pictures. On the plus side if these cars are maintained properly they seem to hold up really well. Occasionally really nice/clean/lower mileage mk1's show up, while some others may need a little love and attention before being ready for a good road trip.

as much as I'd love to get a car that would need some work before its trip, I live in Maine- you can't find a '98 that doesnt have some pretty bad rust damage. I've seen three (3) mk1's in this state, ever... so I'm going to have to travel fairly extensively to find this car, and having it shipped back seems silly. So unless I can do the work there, it's not really any good... Gotta drive!

I'm really hoping to get it down to FL to visit a friend for a week or so, too. I could probably dod some minor work there, but nothing major as I'd only have basic tools available to me.

I'm thinking west, like Arizona or so, would be a good place to find a rot-free car. However, a car from arizona would have to drive over 2,000 miles to get to florida, and then another 1500 to get to Maine.... I expect the trip with detours to exceed 4,000 miles, so it has to be a good reliable car; this is why I'm looking now when I don't plan to go for another 4-6 months

Hopefully someone here on the boards will have something they're selling, so I can talk to them extensively about the car before I fly out there.

Seems mr2trader.com currently has a single MK1, and if the underbody is as bad as the rear wheelwell that car isn't in any better physical condition than my 93 olds that's been exposed to calcium chloride for the last decade

Does that site get a-lot of traffic? Can anyone else vouch for it?

Welcome to the board. Looks like you may have to travel for one, but not a big deal if you find the right car for the right price. Good luck.

Travel is the point, I've left new england once in my life, and I really enjoy driving... this is more of a roadtrip/vacation than a car buying thing, it just happens that I've found the car I'd truely *want* to just drive in, and I'd like to say I did that before I die
