salutations

hello to the mr2 community! we are from the kansas city area and will be buying our first mr2 on sunday. very excited! we also have a bugeye wrx that is slightly modded and plan to do the same to our soon-to-be mr2. we plan to post here (most of which will quite possibly be questions), so just thought we'd introduce ourselves first. thanks!

ain't that the truth. thing is, we told him the day before that we would be out there in the evening to buy it. oh well. cash talks...

in high school i dated a girl that had a red 91 turbo and i loved that car more than anything. only reason i dated her, to be brutally honest. nice to finally be able to drive one and NOT have to kiss a wildebeast to do so.

your sig is making me impatient! we were talking with a few other people out there but we decided to go with the closest one that wasn't modified. my brain is twitching trying to think of what the first mod should be. any suggestions?

Honestly, take your time before doing any mods. I can assure you, your opinion will change on what you like after you see some MR2s with different mods in person. Mods can get very expensive, and changing your mind makes it worse. I'd start with regular maintenance type things first and getting the car in tip-top shape. It's a cool car stock, so don't feel the need to mod it right away.

i plan to leave the engine alone for at least a month or two. i would be more interested in some good wheels/tires and suspension first. she wants to auto-cross it and still have it as a daily driver, so we're not planning anything like 800+hp. well, she's not planning that

The first thing you should do is take it to the largest parking lot you can find very late at night, get it up to a pretty good speed, turn as much as you feel you can while still on the throttle and then take your foot completely off the throttle. You should go into a heavy oversteer and probbly spin out. This is snap oversteer and its killer if you're not used to it.
The only way to fix it is to countersteer quickly and apply a bit of throttle to get some grip back to the rear tires.
This will put you way off line, but it will stop you from ending up backwards.

Welcome to the board and your avatar is awesome =)

*edit*
You could also goto a race track or other sanctioned event to get this practice in, but Im from long island where racing doesnt exist so It takes me a while to remember that you dont have to use parking lots to do this stuff =P

thanks for the advice! i'm way too used to awd, so i will have to practice the rwd handling, as well as summer. we have plenty of open space in kansas, but with autocross around the corner and the local road course opening soon, i know we'll be spending lots of time there. thanks for the welcome!

we made it home about 30 minutes ago with the mr2. even with a trailor on the back of it carrying 2 sets of wheels and tires and the stock exhaust in the trunk, that thing was fun to drive!!! few minor things are wrong with it, but nothing mechanical (yet). do mr2's have problems with the speedometer? it wouldn't go over 50 even though we were doing 70. is the clutch adjustable? it seemed to grip fine but had to push the pedal ALL the way down to shift and start the car. anyways, time to start the list of things to do. thanks again for all the advice and help!

Hmm, fun problems.

So, the speedometer. More likely a sticky needle than anything else, as a broken speedo cable will leave you with a "0" reading speed.

The clutch is not adjustable, but, it is bleedable. It's a hydraulic clutch of course, which is bled at the slave cylinder on the front side of the tranny. If there's any air in there, the clutch just won't disengage well. You might need to replace the slave cylinder if the problem won't go away (and you prove that's the problem).

Next, the clutch interlock switch is mounted to the floor, and sticks up about a half inch. So, if you don't have the pedal down pretty much to the floor, it just won't start! Beyond that, the switch might be getting old and needing replacement.

with the clutch to the floor, the car starts up fine. it's the shifting that i need to get used to or find a way to make it so i don't have to push the pedal all the way to the floor. i'll start posting in the right areas now that i am an OFFICIAL MR2 OWNER!!!!!! WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
