New Member In Maryland 91 Turbo MR2

Hi, I am Bill, living in Maryland. I originally owned a 86 MR2 I bought brand new from the show room in 86. Loved the car and drove it till I thought it was going to start costing to much to keep. Gave it to my neighbors daughter when it had 180,000 miles on it. She kept it for a few more years then past it onto someone else.

Boy did I miss that car. So finally after many years I finally went out an bought another MR2. As of today, I am the proud owner of a 91 turbo. It is rough around the edges, definetly needs work. The interior has many issues which I hope to fix with some of your help finding parts. The car runs very well, but there are many nagging things that are cracked or broken that I just want to get fixed. The previous owner had a friend repaint it, but it is one of the worst paint jobs I have ever seen, so that will be one of my first major fixes.

Any help or suggestions would be wonderful.....

Welcome aboard Bill. I'm in Baltimore - there is supposed to be people meeting in Rockville every Thursday night - but I'm not sure they are still meeting - I haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

The paint looks good in the picture - do you not like the color?

The paint looks great from a distance. However, he painted everything, including rubber moldings, wheather stripping, and all the parts like the back logo which is usually black and red, all mono tone "orange crush". The color is not a bad choice, but there is so much over spray, and places that were not easily sanded, were just left raw unfeathered, so you can see where there are sections that have layer differences like old baseboard in a Baltimore row house. I took it to my favorite body shop today, I thought the owner was gonna cry. Some of the lights were cracked, so they are filled with clear caulk, almost all of the parts he took off he did not know how to put back or damaged during removal, so all the plastic rivits (ie the trunk interior) are all missing.

I live just North of Baltimore in Harford County. I do plan to make a project out of getting the car in better shape, by first fixing all the things that are broke or cracked, then finding all the parts to replace what has been painted, but shouldn't be, then having it painted properly.

I love driving it around, even in it's present state. I've been driving a 3/4 ton 4wd full size pickup with extended cab for the last 10 years. It's night and day difference here. So now I have come full circle, MR2 MK1, Very Large Truck, now back to the MR2 MK2 this time.

Would love to meet up with some locals who have similar cars and ideas. On my way home from picking it up in DC on my first day owning it, I was greated by someone in the same car as we were running up 95 around White Marsh at 10:00 at night. I'm already attracting attention. It was great...

I drive a 2003 F250 Super Duty to work every day and drive my 2 on the weekends. Its a big change in scenery!

There were a lot of cars meeting at Marley Station Mall on Saturday afternoons last summer. I think most of the cars meeting at the mall are from that car club "Lost in the 50s", but there are a lot of modern cars there too. They are a strange group in that they only want people in their club parking in one area. I had a 2K Corvette last year, and they didn't want the Vette's parking near their cars and actually tried to have all of the Vette's removed from the parking lot.. lol

I'm going to try and cruise down to Rockville one Thursday evening, I'll let you know if anyone still goes down there.

Hey thanks for the pics, I didn't bring my camera yesterday. It was great having about a dozen MR2s hanging out there. Your stereo was bad ass, the Tiburon guys who were with me still want to hook up to tune their car stereo with you. Do you know the guy with his hand on my hood? I want to talk parts with him, but I did not get his contact info before he disappeared.

It was great meeting a bunch of local owners.

Thanks,

Thanks, but after going to the show we got so many comments from people who loved the color, we decided to have it media blasted and then repaint the same color. (By the way, I have the original paint receipt from the original owner, he paid almost $2k for the paint job at Maaco, I don't recomend using them)

Which car was yours? Did we talk?

Yesterday I took off the door panels to determine if the mirrors don't work because the switch is bad, or are the mirrors broke. I would have taken pictures, but I was so amazed at the madness inside these doors, I was in shock.

I started by taking off the tweeter cover, but there was no tweeter there, just two cut 18awg blue wires with crimp connectors. The door mirror wires were also cut, with only 4 inches of wire exposed from the mirror. I found the tweeter inside the door cavity just hanging by one wire. The mid range speaker was held in with drywall screws and had three changes of wire color before getting back to the wiring harness. The mirror was the same way. The wire changed colors three times before making it back to the original wiring harness and then that was cut off too.

All the original plug connectors for the components were still there connected to the door with just enough wire sticking out of them to see what color the cables were.

I cut out all the junk, soldered in new cable and shrink wrapped all the connections. I am happy to say all the door controls and speakers work perfectly now. What a freakin mess. If you don't know what your doing ask.....

Sorry, I had to vent.

Maybe next time. But the car will be completly stripped and refinished by then. This will happen in the next couple months, just collecting all the parts now. I may bring both of the my 2s next time.
