New MR2 man... possibly
I've been trying to get my mom to give me the 91 MR2 she got for my little sister for about 2 years now. She finally let me BORROW it to save gas (my other car has 5.7L V8) and the motor goes 3 days later. Now she's letting me have the car instead of trying to sell it to me. The dealer that sold her the car wants to buy it back and throw a twin turbo motor in it. So... before I make the decision on keeping the car, or trying to get the dealer to trade me something for it, I have a few questions...
1. Does the turbo engine mate to the auto tranny that came with the N/A engine? 2. Can the stock 2200cc N/A engine handle boost or be rebuilt to handle boost, and if so, how much? 3. Aside from the A-Spec & J-Spec engines made for these cars, are there any other toyota engines that could be swapped in that came in other cars? Basically, what CAN I put in it, other than an MR2 engine? 4. Are there any auto trannies with longer gears or 5-spd auto that can be swapped in? I can drive stick, but refuse to spend the extra money to get clutch installed. Wife can't drive stick either. I think i had some more questions, but they slip my mind at the time. I appoligize for not taking the time to search the forum for answers, but I'm in a time crunch with making this decision on keeping the car or not. Thanks in advance for any helpful responses. |

depending on condition I'd say keep it and V6 swap it.
1: yes 2: yes, around 10PSI or so 3: Camry V6 4: Swap the final gear from an automatic Camry into your S54. |

Ok, new questions...
1. what type of power can i expect turbo'ing the stock 2.2 N/A engine? 2. what's the camry v6 rated at, and can THAT be turbo'd? if so, how much boost and what kind of power? 3. does the camry engine mate to the stock mk2 tranny, and will I need to make any mods to the engine bay? Moderators feel free to move this to a different section if need be. |

Been a while, now it's finally time to make a move. Which would be cheaper part-wise?
Engine swap or rebuilding the original. I have family that will be doing the work, so labor would be about the same either way it goes. |

I've scrapped that idea. I doubt I'll be keeping the car now, but I need to get ir running or else it's just a $500 car. The v6 is still a possibility.

Once you find the REAL problem with the car get back to us for some realistic alternatives to that specific problem.

So let me get this straight. You're not going to keep the car yet you're contemplating a V6 swap over a rebuild just to get it running & out the door? A rebuild is child's play in comparison.

Actually, if you're not keeping the car, why bother with it all together? Sure, if the car is not running it's just a $500 car (well, maybe more depending on the condition) but the money you are going to spend getting her running again will cost you more then what you'll get back. Therefore my question, why bother?
