I currently have an 07 impreza 2.5i that ive put some work into and its time to sell it because im looking for a cheaper car thats faster. I hate car payments and i still owe money on the subaru. Anyways someones coming to check my car out on wednesday. Heres a pic of it
![]() ![]() Anyways so im looking at this MR2, it has 120k miles but it looks like its been maintained well, My brother told me not to get it cause im gonna spend alot of money when the gearbox goes out (and according to him it will go out soon). what do you guys think? **1991 MR-2 Turbo Red w/ Black Leather interior-excellent condition ** Im gonna try to get it for 5500, is it worth it? |

Listing expired...hard to tell. Does the guy know the whole history of the car ?
If not carfax might be in order to see if there's been any accidents, or flood. Or, a third party inspection. looking closely at the underside of the car never hurts. The guy I bought my '88 from owned it for 16 yrs. He told me right up front he bought it as a stolen/ wrecked/ car in '93, and he still had the frame shop reciept from then. Find out as much as you can before you buy. suprizes after the fact are no fun. |

The mr2 might not be faster than the suby but I'm sure it will handle much. Mr2's aren't so much straight speed type car but more so twisty roads. Good luck with getting the mr2.

I haven't read about a lot of problems with the turbo tranny (I'm mainly a mk1 guy)... what your brother said is generally true with most imports (many aren't made to handle upgrades, but the MR2 is a mid-engine sports car so it isn't an econobox grocery getter. So this means the MR2 transmissions seem to hold up pretty well (aside from some gripes about the 85-86 transmissions having a 5th gear pop-out problem). Some (N/A or Turbo) get notchy over time, but it depends on how the car was cared for honestly. Never changing fluids and rough shifting can cause problems (as with any transmission). I've got two N/A transmissions in my old 88's and one is strapped onto a Supercharged motor and all that was done is an upgraded clutch/flywheel setup. I'm boosting 14.5 lbs and drive the car hard and never had a problem. That said... a turbo transmission is a bit expensive if you do manage to break it. Good luck in your quest to boost enough to do so

I came from a 2006 Stg2 WRX to an 92 MR2 {I do have an 08 wrx 5 door now as well}. My engine I believe is the 225hp one {running good, but not 100%} and Ill tell you, its pretty damn quick. Its not as fast as my WRXs, but it isnt far behind. Itll definitely be faster than an 2.5i Also remember those subies were around 3200lbs and the mk2s are 2500?. One big difference is the 2.5 boxer is torquey for a 4. Mine kicks in around 2800 RPMs, and the mr2 doesnt have squat near there.
Handling wise.. I had springs + sways on my 06 and it still doesnt compare. the subie was a nice handling car, but after driving the mr2 this summer and some autoX and learning how the RWD mid-engine handles, theres no comparison. Just make sure you read up on the 91/92 MR2s, Snap oversteer, and typical fixes for it. Overall I am guessing your impreza is worth 12k or more in which you can buy / mod / make a pretty sweet MR2. |

1993 Toyota MR2 Turbo - NEW Built MOTOR with the monies you'll probly have, i personaly would look at this lil guy: Black MR2 Turbo T-Tops w/ Gen2 motor Clean Title i am no expert on the mk2's but those problems seem easily fixable or in the case of the AC, i don't want it anyways haha. GL man |

I would love to buy that second one. A clutch can be replaced in a day easily. I wish that was local to me.

ahh the listing expired, well it was a red mr2, it looked like it was dropped, had intake scoops, looked clean and good and 120k miles. Cant find it now ill see when he puts it back up.
My car is slow (its a 2.5i not a wrx) but it handles like a go-kart, i heard about mr2 oversteer but never read about it.. I saw that black MR2 but the interior looks like its from the dog-car from dumb and dumber lol. I want one that has all leather interior, turbo, white red or black, and has been maintained nice. I've been hearing stories about accidents in MR2's though and they dont sound good. Now i know you can always say "well if youre a good driver blah blah" but its not always your fault. I love them though and im gonna get one, this guy who wanted to buy my car faked out like a bitch. pissed me off so bad. he was like "I got a good deal on an acura TL" man acura TL's are gay -- FWD FTL. |

I know yours subie was a 2.5i, but if the MR2 is almost as quick as my WRX, it will be faster than the 2.5i.
And I wouldn't pass up the shaggy dog seat car.. Its just seats, and that's something you can easily swap out even if your not mechanically inclined. |

If you think a Subaru handles like a gokart drive a mk1 sometime (just for fun, I know that isn't what you're looking for). You'll flip out.
Like was said, don't let seats keep you from one, that's super minor and anyone can take care of that (either swap them or have them recovered by a local shop that does that). Also I was going to point out that I came from a 469rwhp 472rwtq LPE 1996 Corvette GrandSport to an N/A mk1... and haven't ever looked back. The MR2's are much more fun, even though they aren't as fast... MUCH more fun. |
