prior mustanger.....newbie MR2...now in love
Hello all....just wanted to checkin. I've been around cars and racing my whole life.....grew up racing Karts, then moved to street stock, later cutting my teeth on the strip in a stang. This year, after selling my stang, I felt empty without a ride.....so I started looking.....and found that the MR2 community is also one of the most tightest around.......so, last week I found my first ....an '86 with only 119K....everything but the A/C works, and the body is in great shape....and get this....I paid only $600 for it.......drove it back from Fresno 220mi and it got 35mpg.......yea....I'ma lucky guy...all except the quart of oil it used....lol..speaking of driving...while there's no substitution for the raw power that my stang had (520 @ wheels).......the handling and spirit of my '86 is outstanding and impressive....like being back in one of my karts, but with much more pep...was a blast to drive through the mountains..
Oh, about me....lol.....I'm active military in SoCal, and I play golf alot......hence the name... lastly, I don't plan to tweek my MkI too much......I just tuned it...plugs, wires, etc....but it still has some issues...... Issues: it smokes (white) while driving a little, and really pours out during acceleration. I've tried a few sealers over the last few days and it seems to be getting better....I know the seals are prolly bad, and that's it, but it's using oil quite a bit...hope it's not the rings......the car doesn't lack HP or seem to be suffering gas mileage.......any suggestions? Wants: The only thing that I'm looking to do is change out the muffler....I'd like a little deeper, Porshe like sound from it..NOT A CIVIC RICER SOUND...no offense civic guys...just don't like that......anyone have a suggestion? thanks guys and gals.......hope to hear from you soon... Pics coming soon.....promise.. Don |

Welcome, Sirgolfalot. As i dont have any suggestions for your problems, or a suggestion for your exhaust, I will say that getting an MKI for $600 bucks is an awesome feeling. Glad to hear that yours was in better shape than mine! Now post up some pics of your 2!

You can beat that 520 at the rear wheels with your MR2.
Your only a motor swap away, its called an MK1.5. Some fab work and 1200 dollars for a 3sgte and tranny is required, but slap a 20g on it, and you very well may blow the doors off your old stang. If you get 400whp out of your mk1.5, you would have a hp to weight ratio in the 2:1 area, not to mention you would still get excellent gas mileage. One guy is entering a suposed 400whp MK1.5 mr2 into grassroots motor sports $2006 challenge. Thats a ton of power and not a lot of weight, and he managed to put it together for less than $2006 If I went on that show pinks, Id bring an MK1.5 with me. |

Or you could swap out your tired old motor with a used supercharged version of the motor, from Japan. Doing a engine swap in Kalifornia is dicey I've heard.

Hey bro,
Sounds like the motor has lost the rings. Check out your cat and look for an HKS High performance Muffler for the MK1. I owned an 88 that ran on 2 cyclnders when I got it. I changed the muffler and cat. Plugs and wires and oil. I also removed the intake plastics and made my own short ram cold air intake. very easy. And yes you can obtain the Supercharged motor complete clip from japan for around $1200 to $1600. You can also look for the supercharger equiptment on the net. I located two complete stock kits with Ecu's and clutches for $200. The old corolla's also use the same motor and supercharger. I always lost a quart of oil about every week or two. I also raced the **** out of that car. It was unbeatable on the street. I got to Vegas from the LA area in CA on a full tank of gas. At the time it was only like $20.00 for the tank. By the way the HKS exhaust is a direct bolt on and is exactly the same as the Stock look. It has a deep sound unlike the Rice-burners that you here on the street....HONDAS. It has a great sound like the depth that you are used to. Of course you are dealing with a much smaller motor. Have fun. Oh.....$600.00 is the best price for an MK1...I got mine from a good friend for $700.00. Good luck. |
