Another New Texas Member
Hello from Austin! I'm John and I drive a 86 5 speed. I bought the car from my older brother's estate. He had the car about 3 years and I have had it for 1 and a half years. Under his care he overhauled the engine and added the header and pacesetter exhaust. We installed a lightened flywheel and aftermarket clutch. I brought him the adj. sway bars from a California business trip and he installed them. The fuel tank was cleaned and a new pump installed by him also
Since I have owned it I have poured solid motor mounts to replace the worn out originals. When the milage was about 160K, 5th gear popout started. I purchased a new transmission from Ebay and did the FWD to RWD shifter conversion so it would fit my MR2. The transmission has 3.54 final drive ratio compared to the original 4.30 ratio. This dropped my RPMs at 73 MPH from 4000 RPM to 3000 RPM. My MPG averages 36 for my car around town. I have yet to get it out on the highway for anything more than 100 miles. In those instances I have broke 40 MPG. My MR2 is very fun to drive, yes it is dated somewhat but I don't care as the car is Toyota reliable and very efficient. I need to replace the tires as they are 6 years old and I want them to grip better. After a 180 degree spin out in the rain, I relocated the battery to the frunk. I hope to get better control with new tires to complement the weight added to the front. I have a 15 year old son that will be taking drivers ed soon. Not sure if I want him driving a MR2. My 19 year old drives a 95 200sx and it seems to be a decent car I hope to have some fruitfull interaction here with you guys and gals, looks like a nice forum. John |
