Brand new Cali-member.
I live in southern California. I'm a big fan of the MK1. Just last night I found a really nice '86. If this all works out I'll be driving it in less than a week. I've been thinking about twincharging the engine and was glad to see that I'm not alone in that little dream. I look forward to joining the ranks.
![]() Hopefully this is going to be the one. |

Looks decent, what are the specs? Mileage / body condition? Welcome to the board.

Unfortunately they didn't list the actual mileage; they only state that it has low-mileage. I emailed them about more pictures and a few random things, but have yet to hear back from them. I'm going to call them in a little to see what's going on.. According to the listing, the body, paint and interior are supposed to be practically mint..But they didn't post any interior pictures. I hope this car is as good as the listing states. From what I can tell, it's exactly what I'm looking for, '86, 5-speed trans, sunroof, black/black, no dents/chips/scratches at all. I'm pretty excited about it. I'm just a little weary on the tinting...Not sure how good of a job it is/the kind of tint I'd like on it(if at all). It's going for just under $3000.

Yea, the thing was wrong and it didn't have power steering. I don't think they came with power steering. I still have gotten it yet because they are trying to make me spend too much...But I am going to wait a few more days, then call em and see if they've sold it. If they haven't, I'm going to try and get my baby back. If not, there's already another MK1 I am going to go check out this weekend. Hopefully one of these guys will give me a good price.

Small update: I won't be able to get my MK1 for a little bit longer than I expected. Turns out my piece of crap Ford Focus is still being paid off by my dad, so I can't sell it till that's over with. I'm going to try and pick up a local delivery job to speed the process of buying my car as quick as possible. I already have $1500 saved up, so it won't be much longer hopefully.
While we're still under the subject of newcomers...This will be my first mid-engine RWD car, as well as being my first manual transmission car. From driving my friends' cars around, I am pretty good with a manual transmission already. When looking for my first 'fun' car, I wanted to try and find something that was slightly difficult to drive; but also very fun. An MK1 was my first choice because I've heard a lot about the car forcing you to become a good driver, otherwise you'd do nothing but spin out all day. Just from the short test-drive I had, I enjoyed the car very much. Even the N/A version is significantly quicker than my POS is. The lack of power steering is a little nerve-racking but I'll get used to it. My main reason for changing cars in the first place was that I can't stand automatic cars anymore. Sure, it's easy in traffic...But I avoid traffic anyway. I don't exactly go driving around LOOKING to sit in traffic, just so I can properly enjoy my automatic car and the awsome gas mileage it has. I really wanted a manual car, something small as ****, and I wanted it a little more responsive/faster than a Craptastic Ford Focus. I was sitting in the gas station of a Sam's Club(like CostCo) and this silver MK1 pulled up. It had some wierd air scoop things that looked like vaccuum hoses(came out/attached to the same place as the ones on the Gen2's). I immediately fell in love with the car, without even knowing what it was. I thought it looked like a space ship, which was the main factor in my choosing between a first and second gen. Anyway, I'm hungry...So if you're bored, read this whole thing and shout me a holla...Dun. |

Just so you know, typically, manual transmission cars are rated at better gas milage than automatics

Welcome! Glad to hear you're looking to purchase a "real" MR2...
![]() I love both of mine, don't think anything short of a major wreck would make me get rid of them. I started with a black loaded 86 like the one you mentioned above. It is my baby. Everything I know about Mk1s was learned on that car. Now working on my new 87 is a breeze. They're fun to work on and more fun to drive. I wish you luck in your search for your Mk1. |

I agree with everyone here about the MK1. I owned an 88 N/A that was quick as all hell. I raced here in Cali in the Ontario area on the streets and never lost except to any turbo-chargered fags. I bet anything that was a 4 cyclinder. I have a buddy that has an 87 Supercharged and he whips on camero's and mustangs all day long. Eventhough the engine doesn't power a ton...the car is agile and light. If you change the springs, cat, and exhaust so that the car handles and breathes better you will have fun even in traffic. And yes, the car will move out from under you faster then you think. I could do a donut at a 4-way stop sign in the rain on accident, and that was from a stop. If you need any advise for the mechanics of the car and what to look out for hit me up homie. Toyota's are supreme on the street.
